Job summary

An opportunity has arisen in Tees Esk and Wear NHS Foundation Trust to appoint or develop a Multi-professional Approved Clinician (AC) within Adult Mental Health acute inpatient services in North Yorkshire and York. This is to support the quality of care for our service users detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007). This aims to attract existing Approved Clinicians or eligible clinicians wanting to train and develop Approved Clinician competencies as a developmental post. The Multi-Professional Approved Clinician, once approved, will join our Adult Mental Health acute inpatient service based at Foss Park Hospital in York.

Main duties of the job

Applicants will be experienced clinicians in senior roles, who are already leading Multi-disciplinary team/s or working as an existing Multi-professional Approved Clinician. They will be an eligible mental health professional of either a registered practitioner psychologist, occupational therapist, social worker or first level mental health/learning disability practice nurse. Applicants applying as a developmental Associate Consultant role, progressing to a Consultant role once an Approved Clinician will be committed to developing their competencies as an Approved Clinician and registered to complete a Post Graduate Certificate in Professional Practice in Mental Health Law by distance learning through Northumbria University, commencing in October 2022.

The successful applicant will work as part of the multidisciplinary team within the adult mental health acute inpatient service in North Yorkshire and York. Whilst developing Approved Clinician competencies the post holder will be appointed as an Associate Consultant at band 8a until able to work at a consultant grade as a Responsible Clinician or at their current grade if an 8b/c. Existing Multi-professional Approved Clinicians will be appointed as a Consultant in their discipline at band 8c.

About us

This Multi-Professional Approved Clinician role is in partnership with Health Education England funded training places and national developments to increase the number of Multi-Professional Approved Clinicians available. This aims to enhance the quality of care, choice and best meet the needs of service users, families and carers. The post holder will be responsible for working as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver best quality, safe, effective and compassionate care. Applicants will be committed to developing Approved Clinician competencies, completing the Post Graduate Certificate in Mental Health law and submitting their portfolio to the appropriate Approved Clinician approval panel. It is expected that the post holder become an Approved Clinician following submission of their portfolio within approximately a two year period. The post holder will report to the relevant Service Manager.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Trained and registered as an Approved Clinician (if applying in developmental role commitment to undertake mandatory AC training).
  • Professional regulation and registration in eligible discipline - psychology, occupational therapy via HCPC; social workers via Social Work England; Registered Mental Health Nurse with current professional registration with the NMC
  • psychologists -Post-graduate training (doctoral level equivalent) in clinical / counselling / forensic psychology (or its equivalent prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS; Registered Mental Health/Learning Disability Nurse with additional masters degree or equivalent ; qualified with approved training degree or equivalent as an Occupational Therapist or Social worker with additional masters level degree or equivalent;
  • evidence of continued professional development and for nurses this includes relevant Post-basic clinical qualification(s) with a professional portfolio supporting this.
  • Psychologists to have Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice), training in clinical supervision and the supervision of doctoral trainees ; for nurses Non-medical prescriber (or willingness to achieve within agreed timescale) and recognised teaching qualification; for Occupational Therapists and Social workers evidence of further training or qualification in an area of specialist practice eg sensory integration, AMHP, OT to be an Accredited Practice Placement Educator (APPLE)
  • significant clinical experience (at least 5 years post qualification)
