This post is primarily designed for trainees interested in a surgical career. The successful candidate will play an active role in all aspects of the surgical team commitments and will be responsible for the day to day management of surgical patients. You will be responsible to the registrars and consultants and participate in surgery and outpatient clinics. This post will support anyone planning to apply for Core training. Applicants should have some experience of common surgical procedures.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work with Consultant Surgeons and their teams, in the specialties of breast, colorectal and upper GI surgery. They will take part in the emergency on call surgical rota. The Trust doctor will be responsible of the day to day management of elective and emergency surgical patients. This includes patients on the paediatric wards.

The appointee will be required to participate in postgraduate teaching and will be involved in medical audit and research.
Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and for contribution to postgraduate and continuing medical education activity locally and, where appropriate, nationally. All Consultant medical staff have responsibility for the training and supervision of junior medical staff who work with them and it is expected that time will be devoted to this activity on a regular basis by Consultants. If appropriate, you will be named in the contracts of doctors in training grades as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as the initial source of advice to such doctors on their careers.
The post holder will participate in medical audit and to act on the recommendations arising from such audits.
There are opportunities for involvement in appropriate research programmes approved by the Trusts' Ethics Committees in accordance with the policies laid down from time to time by the Department of Health and the Trust
