Job summary

To be part of the Paediatrics Diabetes Specialist team providing nursing support to comprehensive service in all aspects of diabetes care and management. To act as a specialist resource, for clients within a caseload, that are being cared for in the paediatrics diabetic services. To be able to give advice to professional staff involved with the client group. Will have responsibility to provide specialist expertise and under-pinning theory to a defined clinical area and support on call services.

Main duties of the job

  1. To work autonomously as a specialist nurse to children and young people with diabetes, their families, carers and other professionals, as part of the specialist paediatrics multi professional team.
  2. To provide clinical expertise to facilitate prevention of hospital admission and support early discharge and readmission.
  3. Provide specialist knowledge and education on the current practices and care pathways within diabetes care and to deliver education to children, families, carers, health professionals and other agencies.
  4. To ensure all support pathways are in place including equipment and provide education and advice regarding Glucose meters, pen devices and Glucose control. Providing advice and evaluation and recommendations regarding specialist equipment.
  5. To initiate insulin therapy in a community setting with advice from senior members.
  6. To have an in depth knowledge of diabetes in children and young people including the insulin profiles and to be able to adjust therapy when appropriate within guidance.
  7. To educate a client group and their carers re hypo / hyperglycaemia and treatment.
  8. To be familiar with oral hypoglycaemia agents and to be able to give advice on dosage and side effects.
  9. To adhere to the NMC codes, guidance and sphere of practice.
  10. To provide a safe environment for children, young people, families carers and other professionals and ensure Health and Safety regulations are adhered to (COSHH), Trust Policies and procedures.
