Pre-registration Pharmacy Technician Apprentice

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated candidate to undertake a two-year apprenticeship to develop the skills and knowledge in all areas of hospital pharmacy practice required to become a Registered Pharmacy Technician.

If you are invited for interview, you will be expected to complete a short aptitude test that is designed to test your numeracy and written communication skills.

Main duties of the job

To develop the skills and the knowledge in all areas of hospital pharmacy practice required to become a qualified Pharmacy Technician, and to work towards the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians.

Pharmacy technicians are vital members of today's healthcare team and contribute greatly in the supply of medicines to patients, and ensuring that patients achieve the maximum benefit from their medicines.

The two-year program involves on-the-job training and work towards completing a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians.

Career opportunities following qualification, and registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (the regulatory body for Pharmacy) include, medicines management roles, aseptic preparation, staff training, clinical trials, procurement, and many more. Further training is available to help develop your career in some of these areas.

Job responsibilities

Patient Care

  • To undertake a wide range of pharmaceutical duties under the supervision and professional direction of a pharmacist or pharmacy technician.
  • Provide a basic clinical technical service by providing a range of pharmacy services to patients.
  • Accurately dispenses prescriptions and ward orders. This involves validation and interpretation of the order/prescription, selection of the correct product, labelling of that product, ensuring that all documentation is completed according to hospital policy and finally carrying out a self-check to ensure accuracy of own work. This may involve handling Cytotoxic, Cytostatic and Teratogenic drugs.
  • Advises patients on the safe and correct use of their medicines and other issues relating to medicines, under the supervision of a pharmacist and within professional, legal and ethical guidelines.
  • Receives prescriptions from in-patients, outpatients and day-patients, taking payment where required.
  • Assembles, issues and distributes drugs to wards, departments, peripheral hospitals and clinics (as appropriate) following receipt of an order.
  • Takes part in the maintenance of efficient stock control including carrying out stock checks, storage and expiry checks as required, both in the pharmacy department and on the ward.
  • Participates in a "ward top-up system", with responsibility for allocated wards, ensuring agreed stock levels and correct storage of pharmaceuticals is maintained. This involves ordering stock for the ward from the pharmacy.

Policy and Service Development Implementation

  • Follows standard operating procedures for the duties undertaken.
  • Work carried out under the supervision of a pharmacist or technician. The degree of supervision depending on the competence of the trainee.
  • Compliance with Data Protection Act and Caldicott principles.
  • Works at all times within other national policies and guidelines e.g. Code of Ethics for Technicians, COSHH regulations, EC Guide to Good Manufacturing Practice, Health and Safety regulations, Trust policies and values.

Financial and Physical Resources

  • Participates in systems for achieving efficient and effective stock control e.g. stock checks, using stock in rotation

Research and Development

  • Undertakes audits as necessary to own work.
  • Dispenses clinical trial material either from a stock order or a prescription under the supervision of a registered technician or pharmacist. This involves the interpretation of the order/prescription and the supply and labelling of the correct product, ensuring that all documentation is completed according to the requirements of the trial.
  • Take responsibility for personal development and education and the development of a Personal Development Plan.
