Job summary
This is an exciting and rare opportunity to complete an audiology apprenticeship. The successful candidate will be supported to complete BSc Healthcare Science: Audiology by distance learning while gaining hands on experience in the department. The expected duration of the apprenticeship is 5 years.
Audiology is about identifying and assessing hearing and balance function and their associated disorders. You'd work with patients of all ages as part of a team, recommending and providing appropriate therapeutic rehabilitation and management. Audiology is a rapidly developing field.
Employment will be conditional on being accepted onto the required degree course
Main duties of the job
The main duties will develop over the period of the apprenticeship starting with:
- basic hearing aid repairs and maintenance
- basic advice to patients regarding hearing loss and hearing aid provision
- administrative tasks
- school entry hearing screening
- basic otoscopy
developing over time to include:
- audiometry for adults and school aged children
- hearing aid fitting for adults
- supporting senior staff in testing pre-school children
- rehabilitation appointments for more complex hearing aid issues

Clinical
- To perform daily subjective calibration of audiometric equipment identifying and analysing any faults.
- To perform routine audiological assessment in patients with auditory disorders, evaluating and interpreting results.
- To perform audiological assessment on school age children, diagnosing and identifying hearing problems and taking appropriate action for their care.
- To assist senior audiologists in performing audiological procedures for children under 5 years of age.
- To select and prescribe appropriate hearing aids using technical knowledge, to motivate, counsel and guide parents to achieve maximum benefit from their hearing aids and adaptations.
- To use medical knowledge and experience to perform clinical examination of ears, identifying abnormalities and implementing the necessary action.
- To diagnose and analyse faults on NHS hearing aids and accessories to ensure maintenance and improve and uphold high standards of patient care.
- To contribute and help in training of students or apprentices in the department, report on their progress to the Professional Head of Audiology and Senior Audiologist, and help compile log books and training manuals.
- To maintain an up to date knowledge of clinical developments.
- To select and provide high specification digital hearing aids and earmoulds using technical and scientific knowledge.
- To record and update patient demographics and audiological information onto the Patient Management System. To ensure all local procedures for the administration of patients is adhered to.
