Job summary
At EKHUFT we are pleased to be offering a Specialty Doctor Post in Paediatrics to join our dynamic Child Health Team. The appointee will participate in a 12 PA rota including on calls in Paediatrics William Harvey Hospital (WHH).
The Child Health Department at EKHUFT encompasses a broad range of Paediatric services with Inpatient paediatric and neonatal services located at the William Harvey Hospital (WHH) in Ashford, inpatient and Special Care Baby Unit facilities at Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital (QEQM) in Margate. Ambulatory paediatric care is provided at Dolphin Ward, Kent and Canterbury Hospital (KCH), Canterbury and Carousel Ward, Buckland Hospital, Dover.
Padua Ward at the WHH is a 28-bed inpatient ward for children and young people, with two dedicated high dependency beds. Appointees will also work on the children's assessment unit (CAU) which accepts referrals from GPs and from the Children's Emergency Department (Children's ED is staffed separately by the ED team). Over the next year the CAU will move from Padua to a dedicated space within the emergency village, as part of our multimillion-pound ED development. Outpatient activity is delivered in an adjacent paediatric outpatient area. There is an outdoor 'roof' play area and a good-sized indoor playroom, supported by the play therapy team.
Main duties of the job
Appointees will work within acute paediatrics, including cover for acute admissions, inpatients, ambulatory care and outpatient clinics (alongside consultants). There are potential opportunities for development within a range of subspecialties; appointees may also request opportunities for experience within community paediatrics (which is integrated into EKHUFT) and our level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at WHH, which provides a full range of medical intensive care including high frequency oscillation, nitric oxide therapy and therapeutic hypothermia.
We expect that all specialty doctors will develop their skills and experience while working with us: every specialty doctor is supported by a consultant educational supervisor. Previous post-holders have been successful in obtaining consultant posts following CESR accreditation, ST posts on the RCPCH training program, and educational roles with Kings College Hospital, and the new Kent and Medway Medical School.
A business case to expand the number of child health consultants has been approved, with recruitment underway, providing a strong opportunity to develop our services as well as implement new and innovative ways of working. Successful candidates will demonstrate enthusiasm to participate in our innovative service development, improving our ability to meet the demands of our local population and deliver responsive and timely care.
About us
We are one of the largest hospital trusts in England, with five hospitals and community clinics serving a local population of around 800,000 people. Our vision is 'great healthcare from great people'. Everything we do is guided by our values: 'People feel cared for, safe, respected and confident that we are making a difference'. We have a new way of working at East Kent Hospitals, called 'We care'. It's about empowering frontline staff to lead improvements day-to-day. We're looking for compassionate people to be part of our improvement journey for the patients, families and carers we care for every day.
Please note that if you require a Certificate of Sponsorship to work in the UK you must declare this on your application form, even if you currently have a certificate of sponsorship or a work permit for another role and are already working in the country. Please note we are only able to sponsor candidates on a Skilled Worker Visa applying for roles Band 5 and above.
