Job summary

Critical Care in East Kent Hospitals is at an exciting period of redevelopment, having attracted national investment to deliver a critical care hub for Kent and Medway. We have recently moved to a new 24-bed purpose build unit which boasts excellent facilities for both patients and staff. This includes;o Hi-fidelity simulation suite within the ICUo Regular protected teaching which maps the FICM syllabuso Dedicated time within the rota to develop and run the simulation programme

The post holder will be expected to help design and deliver simulation courses for intensive care across the Trust, working alongside the practice development nurses and Trust ICM Lead for Simulation. The candidate will become trained in facilitation skills for debriefing and learn how to write scenarios using the IRIS scenario authoring platform. The post-holder will be encouraged to develop multi-professional learning, including medical students from GKT and KMMS medical schools. There will be opportunities to engage new groups of staff with simulation-based learning during the course of the fellowship and to further develop established courses.

Main duties of the job

  • Review of critically ill patients on the ICU, emergency department and hospital wards.
  • Admitting patients to the ICU under the supervision of the Consultant.
  • Ordering and interpretation of investigations Safe and effective handover between shifts.
  • Deliver simulation-based training to the intensive care department.
  • Help deliver simulation teaching to the teams within the Trust and medical school.
  • Active participation in the teaching programme (which follows the FICM syllabus).

The senior clinical fellow post is designed to supplement the senior ICM and anaesthetic trainees in providing 24/7 cover to the intensive care unit. The rota is a full shift pattern (1 in 7). There is dedicated time within the rota for clinical fellows to pursue an area of interest and improve on their CV. It is a Trust position, with 10 days of study leave allocated per year.

  • Full GMC Registration
  • Completion of Foundation Training or equivalent.
  • Completion of basic training in anaesthesia, medicine, EM or ICM.

Desirable

  • MRCP, MRCEM, Primary FRCA or another post-graduate qualification.

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Ability to prioritise clinical workload.
  • Safe and effective communication.
  • At least 6 months experience working on an ICU.

Desirable
