Job summary

We are pleased to invite applications for a part time Consultant Psychiatrist in Occupational Health. This post supports the success of the Occupational Health (OH) service as part of the growing multidisciplinary team within East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust's (EKHUFT) OH Department.

The OH service has SEQOHS accreditation since 2013 with a team committed to achieving and sustaining high quality services comprising of a Head of Occupational Health, Medical Staff, Occupational Health Specialist Nurses, Occupational Health Advisors, Vaccination Team, Occupational Therapists, Manual Handling Practitioners and supported by Business, Data and Administrative staff.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be required to work at least 4 clinical sessions of Programmed Activity per month, including Supported Professional Activity (SPA) and support the supervision of OH clinicians. The sessions can be timetabled flexibly with the successful applicant. The main purpose of this role is to expedite access to psychiatric advice for EKHUFT staff and external contracts, with an emphasis of diagnosis and advice on further treatment. The postholder will undertake consultations with staff employed by EKHUFT as well as by contract to other NHS Trusts and employers, in line with the agreed criteria and pathways; providing evidence-based advice to the OH department. Referrals to the postholder will come from members of the OH department.

Essential

  • GMC Registration
  • FFOM or MFOM & CCT Specialist registration or will obtain within 6 months of interview
  • Minimum of English Level 2 (GCSE grade C or equivalent), ILETS, or graduate of a UK Medical School.
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in Occupational Health.
  • Evidence of on-going CPD.

Desirable

  • NHS OH experience. Formal training in teaching, educational & clinical supervision and appraisal.
  • Post Graduate Degree, e.g. MD, PhD, MSc.
  • Other relevant medical and non-medical training/degree.

Skills and experience

  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for role. Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge, including the interaction of work and health. In particular, an ability to risk-assess in relation to safety-critical roles.
  • Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others.
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.

Desirable

  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service.
  • Knowledge of income generation.
