Job summary
This post offers an exciting opportunity to join a progressive and dynamic team providing orthodontic services for complex and multidisciplinary cases across East Kent. The successful candidate would work within a purpose-built department alongside maxillofacial surgery and restorative dentistry with its own laboratory and radiographic facilities including CBCT. The department has recently expanded and now has 13 dental chairs and is on a journey to become fully digital.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will carry out clinical and administration duties under the care of Mr DiBiase, Mr Power and Mr Shagmani, Consultants in Orthodontics. Duties will be to provide orthodontic treatment for patients with complex malocclusions under consultant supervision, who will retain overall responsibility for all patients seen in the department. There aremonthly multi-disciplinary surgical and restorative clinics with opportunities to attend main theatre operating lists for restorative and orthognathic patients. There are also monthly joint clinics held with the South Thames Cleft Service. There will be times when the Consultant are away from the department on the sessions when the post-holder attends and he/she will be expected to provide continuity of care and emergency cover as appropriate on that session. All departmental protocols and policies must be followed and the post-holder must always seek advice when appropriate. The post-holder will be encouraged to update his/her knowledge and skills suitable for Continuous Dental Education also to be involved with departmental audit. The level of supervision will be dependent on the candidate's previous orthodontic experience and the frequency of observation and supervision will be reviewed following appointment.
There is no on call cover required for this post.

- Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery; 7 Consultants, 2 Registrars, 3 Speciality Doctors and 8 Dental Core Trainees.
- Orthodontics; 3 Consultants, 2 Speciality Registrar Trainees (StRs 1-3) linked to Guys and 3 Orthodontic Therapists
- Restorative Dentistry; 2 Consultants, 1 Registrar, 2 part-time Speciality Doctors, 1 Dental core Trainee and 3 part-time Therapists
- There are 30+ Dental Nurses & Dental Radiographers, including a Dental Nurse Manager
- There is a Unit Manager, Service Manager and Deputy Operations Manage
- The orthodontic unit has a proven track record of award-winning research with excellent opportunities for collaborative studies which the successful applicant would be encouraged to be involved in. Duties also include teachingand supervision of the orthodontic therapists and StRs as well as taking an active roll in audit. We also work closely with our local specialist practitioners and MCN which again the successful applicant would be involved with.
- The department was purpose built 8 years ago and has 13 dental surgeries and a large on-site laboratory, which provides excellent clinical support. The department also has its own full radiology facilities including CBCT and 3D model and intraoral scanning as well as a dedicated study/admin room for the trainees.
