Job summary

Point of Care Testing (PoCT) in East Kent is expanding to provide rapid testing for Covid-19. This is an exciting opportunity to join our dynamic Point of Care Testing team and contribute to safe and effective patient care.

PoCT testing is used by our clinical teams to make immediate treatment decisions for our patients. The post holders will contribute to the quality of these clinical decisions by supporting the existing PoCT team to deliver advice and training and perform quality tasks to ensure the quality of the results produced. Ultimately this service will operate at a level that will satisfy ISO accreditation.

Full training will be provided in the use and management of our PoCT device portfolio and the associated IT solutions.

The PoCT department is linked to our ISO accredited laboratories and is embedded within the Pathology quality management system.

Main duties of the job

Point of care testing (POCT) can be defined as pathology testing performed close to the patient to enable immediate clinical decisions and patient management. The Pathology department manage the governance of PoCT activity across the organisation.

The purpose of the job is to support the PoCT Coordinator in the implementation of a rapid testing solution for Covid-19 within our emergency admission pathways.

This will include but is not limited to device maintenance and troubleshooting, performing molecular testing for Covid-19 within the emergency departments, managing consumable stocks, documentation and communication of patient results and adherence to appropriate infection control policies.

Job responsibilities

To work in accordance with, and assist in coordinating the requirements of the Trusts PoCT policy in order to maintain high standards of patient safety relating to the use of PoCT.

Participate in a 24/7 shift pattern to perform molecular testing for Covid-19 using rapid testing platforms

Document and communicate patient results

To assist in the administration of External Quality Assurance schemes, including the preparation, distribution and result collation and submission.

To assist with document control using the laboratory Quality Management System (QMS).

Liaise with suppliers and other Trust departments such as Electronic and Medical Engineering and pharmacy regarding equipment, consumables and maintenance/preventative maintenance of equipment.

Use knowledge and skills to troubleshoot equipment and minimise service downtime.

Assist in maintenance of device inventory and device fault logs.

Reports unsatisfactory performance of POCT equipment to POCT Coordinator or site specific PoCT lead.

To use the IT infrastructure to manage PoCT devices.

To perform regular audits as directed by the PoCT Biomedical scientists.

To assist with compliance with all Health and Safety and COSHH requirements, maintaining safe working practices.

Liaise with service users and provide basic advice when required.

To work in an efficient, effective and timely manner and to be adaptable to change and comment on procedures or possible service developments.

To work in a safe manner in accordance with the Trust and Laboratory Health and Safety policies.

Demonstrate self-directed development and work practise.

To demonstrate a positive professional attitude to the work of the laboratory and other members of the laboratory team.

Participate in the quality objectives as set out in the Discipline, Directorate and Trust policies

Participate in the Pathology individual performance annual appraisal scheme
