The holder is expected to be able to be competent to independently provide diagnostic cellular pathology reporting service as part of a team respectfully and in cooperation with consultant cellular pathology colleagues and associated staff.This post has arisen to service increasing workload. The post holder/s will join a team of 7existing Consultant Cellular Pathologists. The department is ISO 15189:2022 accredited. The department receives approximately 30,000 histology requests (42,000 specimens), 2000 Non-gynae cases. The department ceased to participate in cytological cervical screening in December 2019 in line with national initiatives.

There have not been hospital autopsies for two years. Coroner's autopsies are performed by the Corners pathologist. Work is allocated according to Royal college workload units determined by available direct clinical care sessions in individuals agreed team job plans.The department has moved to a partially subspecialist model and work is allocated to individuals according to their required number of daily units and a pre-circulated rota. This is derived from two sources: firstly, specialist work, and secondly this is supplemented by general histopathological reporting material according to remaining point capacity.

Main duties of the job

The specialist areas in the department include: Renal Pathology, Dermatopathology, Uropathology, Respiratory Pathology, head and neck pathology, Gynaecological pathology, Non -Gynae Cytology. It is anticipated that the post holder will support and have or be prepared to develop an interest in Dermatopathology, Gynaecology and Gastro Enterology and provide support for Respiratory pathology. Support for Non-gynae Cytopathology would also be welcome but other areas of interest will be considered. It is also expected that the post holder will participate in the service and training requirements of the Cervical Screening Programme for the reporting of Histology specimens. The partial subspecialist model is better suited to those with wide experience in histopathology. Following restructuring the main laboratory and processing facilities are at Epsom General Hospital. A satellite lab supporting the renal service, frozen sections, autopsy service, and cytopathology service is located at St Helier. The Skin Immuno fluorescence service is also provided at the St. Helier site.

  • Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practice) with the GMC (or eligible for registration within 6 months of interview). FRCPath or equivalent
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. oApplicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
