Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an individual to join the Research and Development Dept at Epsom & St Helier Universities NHS Trust as Research Assistant. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual who is keen to work in a Clinical Research Environment.

You will work as part of the Research Team; supporting and delivering high quality research. The maternity research team supports studies across a range of specialities and there may be opportunity to support other NIHR activities during any periods of reduced workload in the maternity research portfolio.

The post holder will work at either site for Epsom and St Helier Hospital, but may also be required to support research activity elsewhere in the Trust for other disciplines if required where there is capacity to do so and you have the relevant capability to assist.

You will have excellent organisational, IT, 'a can do' attitude to work, interpersonal skills, and be able to work both independently and as part of a team.

An understanding of the principles of research would be helpful, but specific training will be given to the successful candidate to undertake the role.

A visit to the department or having a chat to the team would be recommended when applying for this post.

Main duties of the job

Research Data Management and Quality

  • Collecting patient data from patient notes and the Trust's electronic systems in order to record clinical trial data onto electronic or paper Case Report Forms (CRF).
  • Ensure collected data from all trials meets the protocol requirement and is complete and accurate.
  • Check validity and completeness of research data collected, take action to obtain ensure that clean data sets are provided for analysis.
  • Ensure reporting timeframes met.
  • Liaise with MDT involved with each trial and resolve any queries raised.

Patient Recruitment/Retention

  • Be able to liaise with participants in line with trial protocol. Perform study relevant specific point of care test where competent.

To book and follow up participants for research visits.

Provide support for study data monitoring.

  • Conduct telephone calls to patients to capture data required for clinical trials and to document appropriately and accurately
  • To deal sensitively and in a professional manner with patients in person and on the telephone
  • To process potentially distressing and highly sensitive information appropriately and confidentially
  • To exercise appropriate analysis and judgement when dealing with complex situations and to know when to ask for assistance from senior colleagues
  • To attend study set up, advertising and reporting meetings.
  • Provide robust set up and administration of new and follow up visits.
