Job summary

Applications are invited for a 10 PA Full time Locum Consultant Haematologist to cover a period of maternity leave based at Epsom Hospital with cross site attending and on call at St. Helier Hospital. The post is available from July 1st 2024.

This is large acute Trust serving a population of approximately 500,000 in South West London and Surrey comprising two acute hospitals, one in Epsom and one in Carshalton. Clinical and laboratory haematology work is conducted at both sites, with an inpatient unit for patients receiving high-intensity chemotherapy at St Helier. The Trust is a major provider of clinical teaching for St George's Hospital Medical School and has close links with the Royal Marsden Hospital for tertiary level haemato-oncology services.

The successful candidate will join an established and enthusiastic team of 8 WTE consultants, and will be expected to be broadly skilled and to take part in clinical and laboratory duties at both St Helier and Epsom General Hospitals.

A Consultant wishing to work less than 10 PA's will also be considered for the post. Modification of the job content would be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with colleagues.

Main duties of the job

The principal duty of this post is to provide a comprehensive Haematology service to patients.

1 To comply with the GMC's guidance on 'Good Medical Practice' at all times.

2 To ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.

3 To undertake duties as defined within the attached job plan in so far as practicable and in agreement with your Clinical Leads.

4 To be responsible and managerially accountable for the reasonable and effective use of Trust resources that you use and influence, and professionally accountable to the Medical Director.

5 On commencement to ensure personal attendance at the Trust's corporate Induction (or arranged Consultant Induction).

6 To participate in the Trust's Statutory & Mandatory training programme.

7 To be responsible for the Clinical Management of in and out patients under your care.

8 To demonstrate flexibility according to departmental requirements after discussion with the Clinical Lead.

About us

The clinical haematology services at Epsom and St Helier comprise an integrated service with joint Clinical Leads Dr Sneha Muthalali and Dr Caroline Ebdon.

At both sites the Haematology and Chemical Pathology laboratories have merged to form a Trust wide Blood Sciences department. Dr Caroline Ebdon, Dr Sneha Muthalali and Dr Helen Johnstone are joint heads of the Blood Sciences laboratory service across site. There is a Blood Sciences Service Manager who is directly responsible to the joint heads of department. He delegates managerial and scientific duties to other senior scientific staff, notably the scientific leads of the various laboratory sections.

The Department has improved its links with the Royal Marsden Hospital (RMH) in recent years, and RMH now provides funding for Pathology Reporting within the Centre for Molecular Pathology (HMDS).

Clinical Haematology outpatients, inpatient and day case activity is also managed by the Clinical Services Division.
