Consultant physiotherapists practice within complex, unpredictable and normally specialised contexts, demanding innovative work which may involve extending the current limits of knowledge. Consultant physiotherapists are highly qualified clinical experts and leaders recognised locally, nationally and some internationally. They directly influence effective and efficient patient care, the quality of patient experience, education for health professionals and clinical research. They work towards developing and extending the responsibilities of physiotherapists who work within their domains of practice which involves the development, improvement, evaluation and expansion of healthcare and education services. They are experienced organisational leaders on projects, pathway development or implementation of services within physiotherapy, as allied health professionals and multi-professional team leaders.

Consultant physiotherapists combine expert clinical practice with research, education and strategic leadership. The focus of role fluctuates based on the needs of the service, and clinical time approximates 50%.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for professional, strategic and clinical performance of all MSK physiotherapy services across the Surrey Downs area working closely with the operational lead.
  • To facilitate and develop innovative and transformative clinical leadership for the MSK physiotherapy services across the Surrey Downs area.
  • The post-holder will manage the operational lead for MSK services across the Surrey Downs area.
  • To strategically plan and develop the MSK physiotherapy service in collaboration with the ICP and service users in line with national policy and guidelines
  • As a member of the Management Team the post-holder will assist the Chief Operating Officer for Community Services and collaborate across Therapy Services as requested. Deputise for the Director for Multi-professional leadership or COO as required.
  • Responsible for leadership in maintaining and improving all aspects of clinical governance, evidence informed practice and quality assurance in the MSK service across the Surrey Downs area.
  • Uses expert clinical reasoning skills to provide specialist support, advice and education to the Physiotherapy/MSK Team
  • To maintain a clinical caseload in own area of specialty as an autonomous practitioner
  • To promote the Trust MSK physiotherapy services locally regionally and nationally through wider organisational working and representation.

Service development

  • To develop new working practices and local guidelines and keep abreast of new techniques in relation to the management of the patients in MSK physiotherapy, particularly in line with any national guidance e.g. digital technology, and self - management.
  • To design and facilitate services changes that respond to national initiatives and policy within the framework of clinical governance including clinical effectiveness, evidence informed healthcare, managing clinical risk and, research and development issues.
  • To lead on the development and implementation of quality standards for effectiveness of patient care within the MSK teams working across the organisation, ensuring that these are continually monitored and improve.
  • To ensure development and implementation of policy and service changes, contributing to and supporting continuous improvement.
  • To ensure that the service is reviewed, planned, developed and delivered in line and in response to the current and projected priorities of the Trust and relevant National priorities.
  • To provide advice and support regarding MSK physiotherapy services to the COO for Surrey Downs and lead strategic projects, future service provision and business planning for the MSK therapy services.

  • To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own practice and professional activities undertaken in individual patient or trust wide programmes.

  • To be responsible for own and department patient care plans and to be consulted as required for expert advice and guidance by junior and senior team members and other health care professionals both within and outside the Trust.
  • To manage clinical risk within own caseload at all times and ensure clinical risk is effectively managed across the designated teams
  • Able to interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts, which may be conflicting, to form accurate diagnoses in the most highly complex types of conditions.
