Job summary

We are looking for a Band 4 Mental Health Workerto join our innovative and rapidly expanding Integrated Access Partnership, working with the Emergency Services Mental Health Triage Team. This is a rotational post, with opportunities to work across a number of bases, including the SWASFT (South West Ambulance Service Foundation Trust) clinical hub (999 ambulance control room) in Bradley Stoke, NHS 111 (Brisdoc, Whitchurch, Bristol), Urgent Assessment Centre (Southmead, Bristol) and on our Rapid Response Vehicle providing face to face assessments in the community.

Working as part of a multi agency team, helping emergency service colleagues to support individuals experience mental health crisis is incredibly rewarding. You will be working alongside Police & Ambulance services and be triaging people of all ages whether they have a learning disability, personality disorder, substance misuse or other mental health issue at the first point of contact.

Our aim is to provide direct access to mental health services, reduce the need for inappropriate S136 detention and provide a timely response, which improves the outcome and experience for the service user. This also allows us to reduce the demand on A&E and ambulances, improve working relationships between Police, Ambulance and health services, by offering support to our emergency service colleagues.

Main duties of the job

No two days are the same within our service as we strive to support the 999 emergency service care pathway. We have a cohesive, passionate energetic team of professionals from various backgrounds with a range of mental health experience. We are leading nationally on innovative processes including alternative points of conveyance, rapid first response from non-clinicians, integration into NHS 111 with an established response to all 999 services (Police, Ambulance and Fire services).

Staff will rotate daily from the clinical hub (Ambulance control room) into face to face assessment roles, rapidly responding under blue lights to 999 mental health related incidents. This is the most comprehensive 999 mental health response in the South West and is drawing nation attention.

You will be required to work rotational shift patterns including unsocial hours up until midnight and attend call outs with emergency service colleagues.

To undertake the role of mental health worker Street triage is to Support Specialist practitioners undertaking assessments/ interventions to enable the individual to access the appropriate support. This may include advising the person in crisis with regards to short-term coping strategies i.e., anger, anxiety, stress management,assertiveness or relaxation Emotional support to individual focusing on motivation andencouragement. Information and advice to maintain good physical health byencouraging a good diet and exercise. Information on rights under the mental health act. Be able to share appropriate information to fellow professionals in line with IG protocols Providing defined interventions as part of existing care plans. Completing relevant paper and electronic documentation in line with the role.

2. Communicate effectively with a wide range of people in order to build and sustain effective and positive relationships with individuals and carers, team members and other agencies.

3. Respond to the needs of individual with sensitivity with regard to their age, culture, race, gender, ethnicity, social class or disability, modifying behaviour to optimise the helping relationship.

4. Promote the rights of individual by recognising differences and acting in accordance with the relevant legislation, recognising and reporting discriminatory behaviour, and taking appropriate action.

5. Promoting independence and increasing confidence by providing appropriate self- help materials, information about available resources/service
