Job summary

AWP are looking for applicants with experience of addiction and recovery to be part of their team facilitating DEP and also supporting people in police custody or courts with other vulnerability issues.

DEP is a non- criminal diversion of a person arrested for possession of drugs. Normally first time offenders, who it is felt may benefit from:

Signposting around drug issuesSafety around risk of unknown suppliersRisk of unknown dose or actual identity of narcoticSafe use of narcotics though the Programme is based on discouraging drug use knowledge of the above issues may lead to safer use.

The course is a group presentation by AWP staff, which leads to open and frank discussion of drug use.

Main duties of the job

Reporting to the DEP manager, you will co-deliver the Drug Education Programme to offenders across Avon and Somerset. You will assist the programme manager to ensure that the intervention continues to meet emerging needs and trends in the continually developing world of substance misuse.

The successful applicant will be responsible for deputising for the Programme Manager/facilitating groups/ training and supervising B4 facilitators and training and supervising peer volunteers with lived experience of drug addiction to help present the course.

When not required to facilitate the programme, the successful candidate will take an active roll within the team who are based in police custody. You will be required to offer support to colleagues and service users once substance misuse has been identified in a person who is in custody. This may involve providing harm reduction advice and signposting to relevant agencies.

Working alongside Criminal Justice Mental Health Practitioners, the post holder will be based within the Bristol Advice and Support in Custody and Courts Team (ASCC)

  • Ability to make critical decisions in a timely, considered manner
  • Ability to travel to various locations across the South West of England
  • Liaise with other agencies to support service users
  • Possession of, or the ability and willingness to work towards, Level 2 Functional Skills (e.g. GCSE Mathematics and English Language Grade C/4 or above)

Desirable

  • Experience of working with people with drug and alcohol problems
  • Experience of working with people who have had contact with the Criminal Justice Service
  • oExperience of delivering group work
