Job summary

The IAPT team in Swindon includes Psychological Therapists and Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners who provide evidenced based psychological interventions using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and other IAPT approved therapies. We deliver treatment over the telephone, in groups, face to face and using digital therapy options.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, suitably qualified and experienced CBT Therapist/ Clinical Psychologist to fulfil the role of Deputy head of Service.

The candidate needs to be BABCP accredited and have extensive experience of delivering CBT based interventions. We are particularly interested in applicants who have had previous leadership roles.

This role provides the day to day clinical oversight of the IAPT arm of the team and the supervision of the psychological workforce. They will also carry a small caseload. They will work with the Operational manager of the team to monitor team performance against KPI targets at the individual clinical level.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of managing staff, including working against targets, as well a detailed working knowledge of IAPT Key Performance Indicators. They will be in a position to offer expert clinical advice and supervision of IAPT Interventions and provide leadership to the wider service in service developments

Main duties of the job

To deputise for the service lead.

Attend and participate in leadership/ management meetings as required.

To undertake regular teaching, as appropriate, in psychological approaches to healthcare to trainees and team members.

To offer regular CBT based Clinical supervision (both individual and group) to peers, trainees and other staff.

To plan and implement service developments regarding specialist areas of skill linked to service priorities in collaboration with the Clinical Lead (e.g. collaborating with colleagues in developing a strategy for the development of CBT in designated area).

To be have a comprehensive understanding of NICE guidelines and ensure clinical standards are in line with these.

To provide an advanced and specialist assessment and treatment role in the sectors, using relevant CPD qualifications for clients presenting with high levels of Distress/emotion/behavioural disturbance.

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with LIFT Psychology staff and stakeholders.

Job Purpose:

To provide a Primary Care Mental Health Service in the LIFT area. To supervise and oversee the community aspects of the Service. To assist in the supervision of other members of the Primary Care Team. To develop and assist in running a programme of psycho-educational courses and groups. To oversee research and data collection. To deputise at meetings for the Clinical Director and Head of Service for LIFT psychology ifs/he is unavailable. To act as Senior Manager and Member Of Operations Team for all areas.

Key Result Areas

  • To allocate approximately 50% of time to direct and indirect clinical work
  • To act as a Lead Clinician and offer 1:1 sessions as appropriate
  • To supervise and oversee the development of the programme of psycho-educational courses and groups run through the Psychology Primary Care Mental Health Service
  • To work with a range of clients in a high volume stepped care approach, some of whom might be very distressed or severely depressed, or have been victims of assault or abuse. Be aware of child protection issues. To be flexible and responsive to individuals needs and tailor the intervention appropriately. Recognise suicidal ideation and other risk factors. Manage highly agitated or aggressive patients or their families/carers.
  • Maintain a no wait Service by being responsive to service demands.
  • Monitor and follow up patients who score above 15 on phq9.
  • Access GP data systems and input clinical notes.
  • To provide a fast response Community Mental Health Service to patients referred by the General Practitioners at the nominated Surgery(ies).
  • To allocate and support staff as discussed with the Clinical Director and Head of LIFT Psychology Specialty.
  • To supervise staff as appropriate.
  • Induct and supervise new members of staff.
  • Take responsibility for providing self help material and collecting payment as necessary.
  • To represent the Service and to deliver presentations both internally and to outside organizations e.g. CCG/CSU and national organizations especially those related to IAPT.
  • To oversee links with voluntary and community organisations, educational and recreational opportunities and resources in the local area which may be of benefit to clients referred to the service

  1. B) Managerial

  • To deputise for the Clinical Director as appropriate.
  • To line manage a team of Senior Primary Care Practitioners. Including sickness and performance etc. To oversee audits and to report any difficulties to the Clinical Director.
  • To carry out appraisals of Mental Health Practitioners and report to the Clinical Director.
  • To provide cover for other members of the Executive Management Team.
  • Interview new staff, member of appointment panel
  • To be a member of the Executive and Senior Management Team, including attending meetings and giving advice to the Clinical Director as appropriate.
  • To be responsive to any unexpected needs of surgeries or staff.
  • Appropriately manage time for clinical work and managerial responsibilities.

  • To over see the organisation and supervision of the work of the Assistants and PWPs

Most challenging part of this role

To work with severely distressed and traumatised clients. To support practitioners in their work with highly distressed clients. Due to the community nature of the service this can be relatively unsupported and often raise conflicting demands. To ensure the delivery of a no wait service in the nominated surgeries. To assist the Head of Service in the management of staff when there are problems and issues. To deliver a comprehensive and quality service within budget.
