Job summary

The Family Safeguarding Team is an innovative partnership model between Swindon Borough Council and a network of other statutory and voluntary sector organisations. The wider Family Safeguarding Team is comprised of substance misuse, domestic abuse, adult mental health workers and children's social workers. Workers from specialist organisations join together to form one team working with families. The Family Safeguarding Team focuses on working to develop parents' strengths to positively change their behaviour and relationships in order to improve their children's lives. By assisting parents to make positive changes more children can stay at home with their birth family and thrive, not just survive.

This 8a Psychologist role is positioned within the aspect of the service that focuses on the mental health of parents. This is a pioneering role with the opportunity to lead on the creation of psychologically and trauma informed environments and practice in the context of family safeguarding.

Main duties of the job

You should have significant post-qualification experience of working in a mental health setting, providing time limited, evidence based psychological interventions (mainly CBT and DBT informed work). The postholder will carry a small caseload, providing psychological interventions to parents with identified mental health needs who are open to the Family Safeguarding Team. You will also provide clinical supervision, consultation and training to the Mental Health Practitioners within the team, and to the wider team, as required, advising on how the mental health needs of parents might best be met.

CLINICAL

To provide a high quality and largely autonomous and systematic psychological therapies service to the Family Safeguarding team.

To undertake highly specialist assessments risk assessment and assessment for suitability for specialist psychological therapies to a small caseload of people with identified mental health needs, as part of the Family Safeguarding team.

To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of clients mental health problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the clients problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy.

To be responsible for providing a range of psychological interventions forindividuals and groups, within the Family Safeguarding team.

To provide at least one specialist evidence based psychological intervention as dictated by the needs of the service (CBT and DBT informed).

To provide highly specialist consultation to the Mental Health Practitioners and others in the team regarding formulation and psychological management of clients open to the Family Safeguarding team.

To use highly specialist psychological knowledge and skills to contribute to the more effective management of service users open to the Family Safeguarding team.

To be involved in the development and delivery of training as appropriate.

To participate in line management and caseload supervision arrangementsprovided by the Family Safeguarding team, and to participate in clinical supervision provided by the Swindon Psychological Therapies Service.

To maintain accurate records and to monitor clinical workload using agreedsystems.

To enter data on relevant systems in a timely manner.

MANAGEMENT

Delegated day to day operational management of more junior staff as relevant.

Delegated caseload supervision as relevant.

Represent the service at specialist meetings as requested.

To participate in service governance processes in the profession and in the team to maintain a safe, effective service which responds to service user feedback.

To promote the use of effective interventions in the service.

TRAINING AND STAFF DEVELOPMENT

To provide supervision for Clinical and/or Counselling Psychology trainees from regional training courses and other courses as appropriate.

To provide training, supervision and consultation in psychological approaches to other staff within the Family Safeguarding team. This is to include joint assessment, formulation of psychological problems and planning of interventions to be implemented by other Mental Health practitioners.

To contribute to the development of a psychologically based, and traumainformed, framework of understanding and care across service settings through providing teaching, training, consultation and supervision.

To participate in peer supervision arrangements for psychologists in the area.
