Job summary

Band 5 Neurosciences Research Nurse/AHP/Assistant Psychologist

Research is different: it's about providing the best research opportunities for our patients; be that by organising and running patient clinics or computer-based data work. If this appeals to you...

Come and join our research team!

The Neurosciences Research Team are a supportive and highly motivated team looking for a new member to help contribute to the progression of treatment for patients suffering from a range of neurological diseases. This post is ideal for those who wish to build on their existing clinical experience and contribute to the development of evidence-based patient care.

If you are dedicated, enthusiastic, with exceptional organisational skills and attention to detail then we may be the team for you.

You would work alongside experienced colleagues based in the Brain Centre and Clinical Research Centre at Southmead Hospital to support a portfolio of both commercial and non-commercial research studies.

Neuroscience experience would be an advantage, but this does not override the qualities of motivation and keenness to learn. The successful applicant will receive a local research induction and will be fully supported and trained to develop in the post.

We welcome informal visits and encourage you to contact us about the role.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for setting up, maintaining, and closing down research studies, including NIHR Portfolio studies, in line with local, national, and international legislation. Duties include assessing patient suitability, obtaining informed consent, coordinating visit logistics, performing assessments, and recording data, including adverse events, in accordance with ICH-GCP.

Initially based within the University of Bristol South West Dementia Brain Bank (SWDBB)/Bristol Brains for Dementia Research (BDR) team, the post holder may work across other NBT research teams as required. A vehicle is essential for home visits, some in remote locations, with occasional overnight stays.

Responsibilities include liaising with prospective brain donors, conducting cognitive assessments, consenting participants, and maintaining databases. They will coordinate tissue retrieval at donor death, ensuring legal requirements are met, and liaising with families, mortuaries, GPs, and other services.

The role also involves taking consent and blood samples for the BDR blood biobank, working with the RRDN on scheduling and data quality, and supporting HTA and ethical compliance for SWDBB. The post is funded by the Alzheimer's Society and is fixed-term, with extension dependent on funding.
