Job summary
We wish to appoint 2 Clinical Fellow in Vascular Surgery (post foundation training/CT level) to start in August 2024 for an initial period of 12 months.
The post is based in the Brunel Building at Southmead Hospital, which is a state of the art new hospital facility and one of Europe's leading hospital buildings. The post holder would be expected to deliver outpatient clinics at one or more of the three networked non-arterial hospital trusts (University Hospitals Bristol NHS FT, Royal United Hospital Bath NHS FT and Weston Area Health Trust).
Main duties of the job
The post holder will make up part of the team delivering care for vascular inpatients. The post will be predominantly ward based, with the expectation that 1 day will be spent in theatre, outpatients or delivering quality improvement. The ward team have close links with the care of the elderly team who provide support for perioperative care. There is a daily consultant ward round (365 days/year). The position would suit any clinician considering a career in surgery or medicine who wishes to gain experience in complex acute care of the older population. The position does not include on call.
Although the post does not have postgraduate approval for training, assessment of progression will be by regular meetings with the post named educational supervisor. Continual assessment with use of PBA (procedure based assessment), attendance at educational meetings and reflective learning will be supported. A formal learning agreement will be in place for the commencement of this post.
The Fellow will be required to participate in audit and quality improvement activity, completing at least one project during the post.
About us
The Bristol Bath Weston Vascular Network was formed in October 2014. The major arterial centre (MAC) for the network is Southmead Hospital. The network is responsible for the delivery of both elective and emergency vascular care to the populations of Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset, and parts of Wiltshire and Somerset. This includes all arterial surgery for this population, and in addition varicose vein treatments and diabetic foot care. The population served by the network is 1.12 million. In addition, the network provides complex endovascular services for the 3.5 million population of the South West. The MAC delivers 24/7 on site vascular surgery and 24/7 on site interventional radiology with a dedicated 32-bedded vascular ward in the Brunel Building, with daily scheduled operating theatre and hybrid theatre sessions for the vascular service.
Full Registration with the GMC is essential for appointment but not needed for application (but you must be qualified to fully register). The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential. Necessary knowledge of English to safely practice in the UK is essential (including appropriate certification as per GMC requirement).
