Job summary

The post holder is responsible for demonstrating high standards of expertise in casting, plastering and bracing techniques, providing technical and professional support for Fracture and Orthopaedic clinic, Emergency Department, Intensive Care, Wards, professionals allied to Medicine, Surgery and Neurosciences e.g. Podiatrists, Physiotherapists and Hand Therapists in the Brunel Building, Southmead Hospital.

Main duties of the job

To provide proficient application and removal of all types of plaster casts and appliances in order to deliver a high standard of care.

To apply and mould casts for more complex fractures under the supervision of medical staff.

To remove sutures, clips and K wires.

Assessment of wounds and application of appropriate dressings.

To provide relevant verbal and written information to patients and carers for example plaster aftercare leaflets to patients and relatives.

To provide written documentation in patient records of all treatments provided.

To work in specialised areas such as theatres, ICU and diabetic clinics as required

To assist the medical team in manipulations, wedging and theatres when required.

To provide information and support to patients, relatives/carers as appropriate..

To give patients advice on health and related conditions in the prevention of complications and future problems.

To work as part of a team consisting of trained nurses and orthopaedic technicians.

To be able to work unsupervised within the remit of the orthopaedic technician.

To communicate with the multi-disciplinary team within the orthopaedic outpatients, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and wards.

To support in the teaching of less experienced staff and other allied healthcare professionals in casting.

To maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.

To deputise in the management of the department during the absence of the senior technician manager.
