Job description

Job responsibilities

Title: Clinical Fellow (ST1/2) Medical Rotation

Employer: North Bristol NHS Trust

Duration: Fixed term of 6 months up to 1 year duration (may be arranged to suit the post holder)

Base Hospital: all posts are regarded as being Trust wide, but the base hospital will be Southmead Hospital

Please note that the base could change as a consequence of clinical requirements.

Educational Approval: the post has neither Royal College nor Postgraduate approval for training. The post is educationally sound and well supported, with excellent opportunities for gaining clinical experience in the specialties covered.

Learning Objectives/Specialist Interests

The post comprises approximately 80% of direct clinical time working in medical and neurosciences specialties on rotation. The remaining 20% (approx. 2 half days or 1 whole day per week) will be protected for either the development of specialty clinical interests or areas of expertise in support of clinical practice. This is once clear achievable objectives have been established.

These could include:

  • Quality Improvement and Audit
  • Development of specialty interest
  • Teaching & Education including Simulation training
  • Clinical Leadership
  • Research

Clinical Experience

This is a non-training post but the Clinical Fellows will get wide ranging clinical experience, supervised by consultant medical staff.

All rotations are planned to give a variety of acute and specialty work. They consist of 3x4 month posts in various specialties across the division of medicine and in stroke and neurology. These may include: Acute Medicine, Care of the Elderly (acute and step down), Respiratory Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Cardiology, General Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Gastroenterology, Renal, Neurology, Stroke medicine and others. We hope to offer some roles which include ITU.

Teaching

You will not be expected to take on any formal teaching responsibility. In most of these posts you will be working with Foundation Year doctors so will be supporting them clinically. Help with informal teaching of ward based medical students is encouraged. If you have a particular interest in teaching, we will support you within the constraints of your timetable.

We have vibrant structured programmes of undergraduate and post graduate teaching, including teaching medical support workers (international medical graduates working towards passing PLAB and GMC registration). We would be delighted if you wish to contribute to this within your 20% professional development time.

Courses/Training/Journal/Clubs/Lunchtime meetings

There is a 2-hour teaching session once a week for the Internal Medicine trainee doctors to cover topics from their curriculum. You will be able to attend these teaching sessions if you wish as part of your 20% development time.

There are also 4 regional training days for IMT trainees. Clinical Fellows may be able to attend these meetings.

There are weekly Journal Clubs and departmental meetings. Clinical Fellows will be able to attend these meetings.

You will have a study leave allowance (10 days, allowing for service needs) and a small study leave budget. You will be allocated an Educational Supervisor.

Annual Leave

You will be entitled to 5 weeks and 2 days annual leave pro rata if on point 0-2 of the salary scale or 6 weeks and 2 days annual leave pro rata if on point 03 and above.
