Apprenticeships combine full time clinical practice with academic study and you will be paid a salary whilst you are learning the necessary skills for your ODP qualification.
At North Bristol NHS Trust we are offering an amazing opportunity to undertake an ODP Degree Apprenticeship in association with the University of Gloucestershire. This route enables the apprentice to acquire the knowledge, skills and behaviours required across different areas of perioperative care. On successful completion of the programme you will be eligible to apply to the Health and Care Professions Council to enter the Register of Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs). You will then be able to apply for a Band 5 ODP contract.
Main duties of the job
You will be employed in the Apprentice ODP role on a 3-year fixed term contract on a full-time basis. You will work as part of the Operating Department Team and you will be paid at B4.
This programme combines work-based and academic learning between North Bristol NHS Trust and the University of Gloucestershire. You will study for a BSc (Hons) in Operating Department Practice, incorporating the Integrated Degree Apprenticeship standards for Operating Department Practice.

During the apprenticeship you will be fully supported to develop skills and knowledge that will allow you to work in todays dynamic, complex and changing healthcare environment. Whilst you will be allocated to the Operating Department, working across a range clinical placement areas to gain wider experience and achieve the learning outcomes of the programme.
You will be completing on-the-job learning and collating evidence of achievement in a practice portfolio. The academic study will make up 20% of the course and is delivered through 'blended learning'. Face-to-face sessions will be in blocks and day release. Online learning can include group webinars, independent activities or reading between the block study sessions.
As an apprentice you are an employee of NBT. All aspects of the academic programme and clinical practice are managed in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
Entry Criteria
All applicants must:
- Be employed in relevant clinical practice (e.g. must have a minumim of 6 months working as a B3 HCA in operating theatres or an interventional suite at the time of submitting an application)
- Demonstrate excellent professional conduct; references from current line manager swill be required
- Have an enhanced DBS
- Be supported in their clinical practice by their employer and have a suitability qualified mentor
- Be able to use IT to search the internet and prepare written work / presentations
- Be able to provide evidence of achievement at Apprenticeship or NVQ level 3 in perioperative care support or a foundation degree / access course or equivalent in a relevant discipline
- Have achieved a pass of at least grade C in Math and English at GCSE, or its equivalent. (e.g. functional skills level 2) at the time of application
- Have confirmation of support from employers that they can be released to attend all academic blocks and days during the course , and will have the support for clinical practice development supervised by a mentor
APEL assessed in accordance with University regulations cost discounted by approved CAT equivalence
