Job summary

This is a locum consultant post for a fixed term period of 12 months, providing maternity cover in the Dermatology Department at NBT.

The post will commence from January 2024. The successful applicant will join a team of dermatologists who work closely with the plastic surgery department to provide a skin cancer service at NBT. We also provide a general dermatology service and have close links with the dermatology department at Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI).

The dermatology service is a local and regional service primarily covering Bristol and South Gloucestershire populations, but we also provide an SSMDT and accept tertiary referrals for patients with complex skin cancer in the South-West. We also deliver specialist services such as Mohs' micrographic surgery, Laser, and Vulval dermatology. The post-holder will join a team of 5 Consultant Dermatologists, 1 associate specialist, 2 specialist nurse and 3 juniors employed at the trust.

The Dermatology Department is within the Surgical Directorate and is managed together with Plastic Surgery to improve skin cancer patient pathways. Currently the Dermatologists see approximately 7,500 new patients and 7,500 follow ups per year. There is a dedicated area of outpatients in the Brunel building at Southmead Hospital that houses both Dermatology, Plastic Surgery, local anaesthetic skin surgery theatres, procedure rooms and a Mohs laboratory. NBT Dermatology clinics are also run at Cossham Hospital, Kingswood.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be based at Southmead Hospital but will be asked to provide a dermatology clinic in a community setting or in another hospital location. The post holder may be asked to work flexibly including the consideration of evening clinics and to be a part of our teledermatology service.

The work of the Dermatology Department includes:

  • General Dermatology Clinics
  • Skin Cancer Clinics and surgery
  • Acute Ward Referrals
  • Advice and Guidance referrals (Tele-dermatology) and photo clinics
  • Remote and face to face general and suspected cancer dermatology
  • Nurse-led drug monitoring and inflammatory disease clinics
  • Specialist Skin Cancer Multidisciplinary Meetings
  • Supervision of a Dermatology trainee/cancer CNS
  • Undergraduate teaching

There are close links with the Dermatology Centre at the Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI), part of University Hospital Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW). Patients requiring complex biological treatments and patch testing are referred to the BRI for treatment. There are links with community specialist nurses for management of inflammatory skin disease. In addition, there is a Mohs' micrographic surgery service supported by 3 part-time Mohs surgeons from UHBW. Our junior team includes a one-year rotating dermatology trainee (NTN), a clinical fellow, and a GP trainee doctor. To maintain close links between Dermatologists across the city, time will also be allocated for the weekly regional combined clinic which is held at the BRI.
