Job summary

This role will allow us to expand our team in supporting the cancer diagnostic journey. We would require the successful candidate to have a broad experience in gynaecology and expertise in gynaecology oncology with an ATSM in Gynaeoncology and / or colposcopy accreditation being desirable.

Main duties of the job

We are a large gynaecology department with a focus on complex benign gynaecology. This role will strengthen our team in the area of gynaecology oncology. We are a cancer unit working alongside the cancer centre at UHBW. Our secondary care service is focused on the diagnosis of gynaecological cancer with the treatment being currently delivered by the cancer centre at UHBW. We have an average of 200 referrals on our two week- wait pathway a month. Our service currently has a locum consultant who is lead for the cancer unit and a Cancer Specialist Nurse. We are advertising for a second Cancer Specialist Nurse

We provide tertiary level gynaecology services in: Endometriosis (BSGE accredited Endometriosis centre), urogynaecology (BSUG accredited urogynaecology specialist centre), reproductive medicine, recurrent miscarriage, management of fibroids, vulval disorders.

We undertake 12 gynaecological outpatient clinics, 7 specialist gynaecology clinics and 17 gynaecology theatre lists per week in a dedicated gynaecology theatre suite. We have ultrasound scanning facilities in the Gynaecology clinics, helping to streamline patient care.

Job responsibilities

(i) Clinical Duties

The postholder will have experience in Gynaecology with an interest in gynaeoncology. They may have additional experience in other specialist areas to meet the needs of the department.

The post will involve leading the Gynae oncology service including regular outpatients, MDT meetings, operating lists and working collaboratively with the cancer specialist nurses and wider team. He / she will be expected to lead further developments in the gynaeoncology service.

The postholder will be responsible for the clinical management of patients under their care, and, in liaison with consultant colleagues, continuity of care when the postholder is absent.

(ii) Teaching and Supervision of Junior Medical Staff & Students

The postholder will be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff. Where appropriate, the postholder will be named in the educational contract of junior staff as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as an initial source of advice to such doctors regarding their careers.

In liaison with the Director of Postgraduate Medical Education the postholder may be required to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education.

(iii) Study & Research

The postholder can request up to a maximum of 30 days study leave within a 3-year period (pro rata for part-time posts) as stated in the Terms and Conditions of Service.

The Trust is committed to ensuring that support is given for Continuing Medical Education. The postholder will be required to fulfil the requirements laid down by the relevant Royal College, and to fulfil the requirements for revalidation laid down by the General Medical Council.

There is a strong research element in our department. We are developing our gynaecology research - participating in multicentre trials in early pregnancy, colposcopy, endometriosis and research projects in fertility. The obstetric research is led by Professor Draycott and Dr Burden. The work on Multi professional Training with the PROMPT programme is now running in a large number of units across the UK and the World. Intrapartum research projects IMOX and the Odon device have been led by the team at Southmead. Dr Burden is lead on research projects in perinatal mortality. We have academic lecturers and academic clinical fellows within the research team. In addition there are research fellows undertaking OOPR programmes in the department and also a teaching clinical fellow who supports the undergraduate training. The postholder can be involved in research in collaboration with the current members of the department or may develop new and related research topics. The post-holder will be required to submit all research development plans which have resource implications to the Clinical Director prior to implementation.

There are professionally staffed Medical Libraries in the Medical Postgraduate Centre at Southmead Hospital, with a rapid service between this and the University Library situated in the centre of Bristol city. A computer literature search facility is available for which a charge is made and the library has links with other networks.

(iv) Audit

The postholder will be required to take part in a Clinical Audit Programme. The Trust has an audit department which supports and monitors such activity. There is an active Trust Clinical Audit Committee.

  • MRCOG or equivalent
  • CCT in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and have been entered on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of commencing the post
  • Specialist trainees that do not hold a CCT must be due to be awarded one within 6 months of the interview date.

  • Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS).

  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
