Exciting opportunities have arisen to join the new Physician Associate scheme working across the Departments of Infection Sciences (Microbiology) and Infectious Disease. The departments are looking to invest in two individuals over a 2 year rotation and support the development their knowledge in all aspects of microbiology and infectious disease.
As a qualified Physician Associate (PA), post holders will provide expert assistance to the medical team and the wider multidisciplinary team, and will participate in all aspects of the specialty team's activities as appropriate, including being fully involved in departmental research, teaching and audit

Main duties of the job

The role will rotate between Infection Sciences (microbiology) and Infectious Disease (ward 27b).
For the Microbiology aspect of this role, the post holder will support the medical team in the laboratory process, contributing to validation of the results produced by the laboratory and provision of clinical advice to clinical colleagues with respect to Microbiology results and diagnostic procedures distinguishing between infectious and non-infectious processes.
When based on the Infectious Disease ward they will work alongside other medical staff under the supervision of the ward registrar and consultant on ward rounds. They will also be involved in MDTs, supporting ambulatory pathways and - where staffing allows - supporting outpatient work. They will be. undertake the procedures in which they are competent when required, e.g. lumbar puncture. Although the priority will be the care of patients on 27b, those with suitable experience will support the consult work of the services when staffing allows.

The Physician Associate works alongside the medical team. They assess and examine patients, present them, initiate and interpret investigations, and recommend treatment. They liaise with other professionals and specialities as required and complete necessary documentation relating to their patients.
