Job summary

Severn Infection Sciences is a partnership between North Bristol NHS Trust and the UK Health Security Agency (formerly Public Health England) and is sited at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. It is the largest infection service in the South West of England. It provides clinical, analytical and infection control services to three large Trusts in Bristol, Bath, and surrounding primary care practitioners. Due to retirement, an opportunity has arisen for a full time Consultant in Infection (Medical Microbiology with or without Infectious Diseases) to join a large and dynamic department of 11 other Consultants in Infection (Medical Microbiology/Infectious Diseases) and 4 Consultants in Virology. The post holder will have a specific role as Clinical Lead for Antimicrobial Stewardship at North Bristol NHS Trust. Within the Infection Sciences Partnership are specialist and reference laboratory services in antimicrobials and mycology. At Southmead Hospital there are Infectious Diseases in-patient beds, and close working relationships with the Infectious Diseases Department exist. There are a wide range of infection related out-patient services. North Bristol NHS Trust and University Hospitals Bristol and Weston have teaching status and are linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England.

Main duties of the job

The Medical Microbiology service at North Bristol maintains a proactive approach to managing infection in patients, liaising with colleagues through consultations on the phone and on the wards for all patients with significant or complex infection, including bedside review of all patients with bacteraemia. In addition to the laboratory diagnostic work at North Bristol, a full bedside consultative service is provided to clinicians, and three daily hospital rounds are conducted in the specialist services to ICU, surgical patients and medical patients. Additionally, the team attend weekly MDT meetings or ward rounds to review all patients with infections in Neurosurgery, Renal Medicine, Vascular, Burns wards and NICU, and all patients being treated with antibiotics through the Hospital At Home service and recently developed OPAT service at Southmead Hospital. Combined Orthopaedic infection clinics are held monthly with the Orthopaedic surgeons, to review patients with spinal and prosthetic joint infections, which is attended by the Consultant Microbiologists.

About us

In 2016, a collaborative agreement between Public Health England (PHE, now UK Health Security Agency - UKHSA) and North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) was created, bringing all the diagnostic infection services under one roof, and forming Severn Infection Sciences as part of the larger Severn Pathology. UKHSA diagnostics is sited alongside those for NBT and Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust in a new, purpose-built laboratory on the Southmead Hospital site, which includes bacteriology, regional virology, national mycology and the national antibiotic reference laboratory. The laboratory systems include state-of-the-art diagnostics, including Kiestra automation, MALDI-TOF and a molecular suite. The laboratory houses one of the largest diagnostic laboratories in the UK, processing almost 1 million specimens annually. Common SOPs have been developed to facilitate testing across all sites served by the laboratory.
