Healthcare Science Assistant Apprenticeship Level 2

This Level 2 apprenticeship programme aims to develop competent Healthcare Science Assistants who can support healthcare science associates, practitioners, clinical scientists and others, in a variety of areas of Healthcare Science.
During your apprenticeship you will work across two healthcare science areas, Cardiology and Respiratory to develop skills in a variety of Healthcare Science Assistant support roles, which will involve meeting, communicating and working with people from all backgrounds.
On completion of the apprenticeship, you will be eligible to apply for roles as a Healthcare Science Assistant. You could also undertake further training and complete a Level 4 apprenticeship to become a Healthcare Science Associate. After training as a Healthcare Science Associate, if you decide to progress your career further you could apply to train as a Healthcare Science Practitioner (by taking an undergraduate BSc (Hons) programme.)
This post does not guarantee permanent employment on completion; however the apprenticeship will provide you with valuable skills and experience to apply for future healthcare science supporting positions within the NHS.
Main duties of the job
The Healthcare Science level 2 apprenticeship is suited to those who are interested in the welfare of others, have a caring attitude and have a keen interest in science.
You will learn how to undertake the tasks involved in the role whilst in the workplace. You will need to be hard working, organised, committed to the team around you and have good communication skills.
In this role you will work directly with patients. This will include preparing patients for diagnostic tests, performing diagnostic tests, inputting data, following written procedures, ordering stock and any other associated administrative duties to support the team.
There will be classroom sessions and work-based assessments which contribute to the learning element of the programme. Apprentices will also complete a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate their learning and skills in practice in accordance with the apprenticeship framework.

As a Healthcare Science Assistant Apprentice you will study and gain the Level 2 Diploma in Healthcare Science through the Level 2 Healthcare Science Apprenticeship Standard. This will involve carry out work-based learning in the departments under the supervision of a workplace supervisor(s) whilst also attending academic sessions as indicated by the academic institution.
During the apprenticeship you will participate in the following activities, under appropriate supervision;
- Undertake height, weight, blood pressure measurements and oxygen saturation checks.
- Perform resting electrocardiograms (ECG) and spirometry.
- Chaperoning within clinical areas.
- To recognise and respect the patients right to confidentiality, privacy and dignity.
- To be courteous and helpful, and sensitive to patients worries and concerns.
- To assist other members of the team in maximising all aspects of patient care.
- Communicate effectively with patients to ensure all assessments undertaken are performed safely and results of the best quality are obtained. Patient groups may include those where barriers to communication exist, such as patients with learning or other disabilities or whose primary language is not English.
- Use appropriate methods of motivation, encouragement and persuasion to ensure accurate results are obtained whilst respecting the integrity of the person and working with them to achieve the best possible outcome.
