Job summary

The post would suit trainee-grade candidates who have an interest in Intensive Care Medicine / Anaesthesia and Medical Education. The post involves a sessional 50:50 split between time commitments to Medical Education Simulation and ICM, comprising :

Medical education componentdelivering simulation-based medical/multidisciplinary education programmes.

  • Accountable to the Postgraduate Medical Education Department (50%)under the supervision of the Trust Lead for Simulation with guidance from a number of ICU consultants with an interest in medical education.

Clinical component at ST3+ (or equivalent) level.

  • Accountable to the Department of Intensive Care Medicine (50%), under the responsibility of the Clinical Lead for Intensive Care; the post-holder will also be allocated an Educational Supervisor.
  • ICM sessions: On call activity (nights / weekends included) and non on-call daytime activity. Rota averages ~ 40 hours / week with appropriate banding. An example work schedule can be requested prior to interview.

Main duties of the job

SIMULATION FELLOW DUTIES:

  • Co-ordination of the Trust Simulation programme in conjunction with the Trust Simulation Lead.
  • Responsibility for Academic Foundation doctors in simulation posts.
  • Assisting Simulation Leads in the delivery of simulation training through the Trust.
  • Demonstrate and teach technical aspects of operating simulators to faculty members and others.
  • Running and debriefing our current simulation training sessions in conjunction with our Simulation Supervisors.
  • Setting up a new multi-disciplinary in situ simulation for the Intensive Care Department with the assistance of the Simulation Lead
  • Assisting Simulation Secretary with maintenance of simulation databases and educational resources.

INTENSIVE CARE REGISTRAR DUTIES:

  • Undertake regular clinical assessment and management of all ICU based patients, in conjunction with consultants.
  • Review and stabilisation of patients outside the ICU.
  • Perform and supervise commonly expected acute interventions for critically unwell patients (e.g. invasive line insertion, advanced airway management, resuscitation)
  • Responsible for intra- and inter- hospital transfer of critically unwell patients.
  • Responsible for the regular and accurate documentation of history, examination, clinical progress, and results of investigations.
  • Work closely with nursing staff, physiotherapists and other associated health professionals, and act as a primary point of contact and referral with other medical teams and diagnostic services.
