Job summary

Commencing October 2025, April 2026 or October 2026 (please note the robotic fellow post is next available in October 2026), these posts are equivalent to a Specialty Registrar Level 8 or a post CCT Fellow in Colorectal Surgery. Candidates holding the FRCS or in the case of overseas applicants an equivalent qualification are invited to apply for the posts which are recognised for higher surgical training.

Main duties of the job

This is presently on a 1:8 rota in St Mark's with a very infrequent contribution to the EGS rota at Northwick Park, and will be banded at Band 1A. The band is subject to regular review and will vary to reflect any revised rota arrangements.

Job description

Job responsibilities

There are 9 Resident Surgical Officers/Fellows (Specialty Registrar Year 7-8/post CCT). The appointees are tenable for six months extendable to one year. The Resident Surgical Officers/Fellows will be appointed to a specific role (e.g. Robotic Cancer surgery, Complex Cancer Surgery, Intestinal Failure/Abdominal Wall, Pelvic Floor (advertised separately) or can rotate through up to two of the specialist firms (primary cancer, complex cancer, IBD) each 6 month period. There are two Complex Cancer posts (including some robotics), two primary Cancer posts (one of which is purely robotic and the other includes some robotic surgery), one intestinal failure and abdominal wall post (including robotics) and three IBD posts (one of which is a robotic IBD post, and the others include complex abdominal IBD and advanced proctology, with opportunities to gain experience in AIN and pilonidal disease).

All RSOs/Fellows are exposed to an exceptional tertiary referral practice in a colorectal subspeciality and will gain in-depth insight into the diagnosis and management of rare colorectal conditions. These posts are intended for candidates at the end of their colorectal sub-speciality training (near FRCS, or equivalent, or post CCT).

All Resident Surgical Officers/Fellows take part in a one in eight rota for St Marks, with a very small contribution to the EGS rota at Northwick Park (one in forty-eight).

This post is designed for 6 months, but can be extended for another 6 months if appropriate.

Duties of the RSOs include daily ward rounds and management of ward patients, contribution to clinics and MDTs and to take an active role in the operating theatre.
