Job summary

To manage the team of physiologists and the lung function rooms on the Ealing CDC site, including all equipment. To be responsible for providing a high-quality diagnostic and patient focused service.

To authorise, perform, interpret and report on a range of complex and highly specialised diagnostic clinical investigations in line with national, Trust, departmental and professional directives.

To work cross-site assisting the Lead Respiratory Physiologist and deputising when required.

To be responsible for the clinical supervision and mentoring of junior physiologists, providing training and assessment of competency.

To ensure personal development through continued professional development (CPD).

To carry out duties and responsibilities according to Directorate and Trust policies.

Main duties of the job

Ealing CDC

To oversee the running of the respiratory laboratories, ensuring all investigation services are provided offering a high standard of care.

To independently perform and oversee the physiology team on a range of diagnostic tests and procedures listed below.

  • Spirometry using a range of spirometers
  • Measurement of dynamic lung volumes by flow volume loops
  • Measurement of transfer factor by single breath method
  • Measurement of static lung volumes by whole body plethysmography/nitrogen washout
  • Assessment of bronchodilator response
  • Educate patients regarding peak flow monitoring
  • Inhaler education
  • Field Exercise assessment, using 6-minute walk
  • FeNO testing

To provide patients with access to appropriate information when required.

To provide weekly activity reports.

To review and provide interpretation for test results generated by other clinical physiologists.

Cross-site

To take part in cross site rotation to Central Middlesex Hospital, Northwick Park Hospital and Ealing Hospital.

To assist in the team management and deputise for the lead physiologist when required.

To act as an independent practitioner in both respiratory polygraphy set up and analysis, and CPAP set up and review.

To operate independently in the highly specialist area of domiciliary oxygen assessment and prescription.

To provide health promotion, education and patient counselling.

To participate in research and audit when required.

  • HNC/Degree in Respiratory Physiology or equivalent subject.
  • Registration with the RCCP/HCPC or able to progress to registration.

Knowledge and experience

Essential

  • Specialist knowledge across a range of respiratory and sleep procedures
  • Experience in lung function testing with experience working at Band 6 or equivalent
  • Experience of working as an independent practitioner

Desirable

  • Evidence of CPD
  • Experience with polygraphy diagnostics and reporting

  • Experience of capillary or arterial blood gas sampling
  • Experience of LTOT or ambulatory oxygen assessments
