Northwick Park is happy to announce, we are building a brand-new 32 Acute Medical Unit (AMU) to supplement our two acute wards (Crick Assessment Unit and Darwin Acute Unit) and we would love for you to join us on this amazing journey.

Northwick Park is a Major Acute Hospital with a busy medical take and an established reputation for patients presenting with a very wide range of medical conditions with a high degree of acuity. Recognition of the vital role that is played by Acute Medicine. has seen the Trust make a substantial investment in the service. This will enable the department to develop three Acute Medical Unit wards (the third opening in early 2024) with patients remaining under the care of the acute team for their duration on the unit. In addition the team runs the Same Day Emergency Care Unit and the well-established Medical High Dependency Unit. Participation in HDU will be optional dependent on previous experience and competencies.

Main duties of the job

These posts will contribute pro rata to the Acute Medicine Rotas in operation at the time of appointment. The medical team at Northwick Park takes around 90 to 120 referrals per day. Around 1/3 of these are streamed via the Same Day Emergency Care pathways, seen on the SDEC. Staffing of take, SDEC, AMUs and HDU is being brought in line with RCP recommended staffing ratios with these new appointments.

The job plans at Northwick Park are annualised such that commitments are delivered over 42.4 weeks of the year (ie 318 DCC and 106 SPA per year).

Job responsibilities

Acute Medical Unit

The acute units will comprise of 84 assessment beds across three wards where patients remain under the care of the acute team for the duration of their stay on the unit.

We provide direct hands-on consultant cover for the Assessment Service thirteen hours per day, seven days per week and has a strong multi-disciplinary ethos supported by our excellent Matrons, dedicated administrative staff and a seven day therapy service.

The Acute Medical units on both sites are supported by training and trust grade registrars and junior doctors. We have an award winning scheme for recruitment of Trust Grade Rotation SHOs.

Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC) The unit currently receives up to 450 patients per week removing up to 45% of the acute medical take from in-patient areas. A variety of pathway and non-pathway conditions are treated on the unit, which is manned by acute physicians as per rota, supervising a dedicated team of advanced nurse practitioners, medical registrars and core trainees. The unit open seven days a week and is comprehensively equipped with diagnostics including ultrasound, ECHO and access to CT with specialist team input.

Medical High Dependency Unit The Medical HDU (MHDU) is a ten-bedded unit. Patients with critical care level 2 needs including NHF (Nasal high flow), CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure), NIV (Non-Invasive Ventilation) and vasopressor support can be cared for in the unit. MHDU cover is provided by acute and respiratory medicine. Our critical care team also provide additional support. Participation in MHDU cover is optional depending on previous critical care experience.

As an Acute Consultant you will be expected to participate fully in the provision of acute medicine services, including clinical governance, service development, teaching, and research. You should have experience in Acute/General Medicine and are required to be on the Specialist Register (AIM or GIM) within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview.

Candidates who are interested in sessions in other Medical Specialties are also encouraged.

This is a full-time 10 PA post, however applications from candidates wishing to work less than full time are also welcomed. The post is predominately based at NPH with cross site working at Ealing as part of the role at a future date. Participation in HDU will be optional dependent on previous experience and competencies.

All newly appointed consultants will be offered to join the Trusts consultant induction programme.
