Job summary

We are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic experienced midwife to lead one of the teams in the community setting. As the lead you will be working alongside other teams to deliver care in the antenatal and postnatal period. Your expertise in the field will support you in navigating, supporting and championing your team to deliver high quality, safe care in accordance to our trust guidelines.

Main duties of the job

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide safe and effective care to pregnant women during the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum period
  • Provide proactive and effective Leadership
  • Expert Practitioner
  • Work in partnership with women and their families
  • Work collaboratively as a member of the Multidisciplinary team
  • Highly developed communication skills in challenging situations in which there may be barriers to communication and changing circumstances

Job responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITES OF THE POST

CLINICAL PRACTICE

  • Work autonomously as a clinical midwife, and as part of the wider team

  • Provide highly specialist knowledge and clinical support to multi-disciplinary colleagues in relation to all aspects of midwifery service provision

  • Facilitate physiological childbirth through own practice and influencing others and act as a role model.

  • Through direct clinical care and influencing/leadership skills with other practitioners and supervision of junior staff, empower women to make informed decisions about their care

  • Utilise highly developed communication skills which includes receiving and delivering complex and emotive information which may challenge practice

  • Support the review and potential implementation of NICE guidance, and other relevant policy directives

  • Support the development of maternity standards through participation and review of local guidelines using national guidance

  • Signpost and make appropriate referrals for specialist information / support for vulnerable families, ensuring the Trust safeguarding policy is adhered to.

  • Knowledge of clinical governance and Risk management and participate in the risk management process

  • Address practice deficits and provide constructive feedback to junior staff

  • Ensure that MAST is up to date

MANAGERIAL

  • Provide day to day management and supervision of the team, acting on behalf of the midwifery matron in his/her absence

  • Deputise for the manager on call, out of hours and weekend

  • Carry out return to work interviews and manage sickness and sickness absence according to trust policies

  • Ensure appropriate cover for service delivery within the team

  • Delegate work to others at all Co-ordination of shifts to ensure safe delivery of care

  • Contribute to manager on call rota
    • Lead in managing patient flow throughout the service and escalating as appropriate

    • Ensure team are up to date with all aspects of training

    • To lead in the Governance agenda as required which will include, investigations, risk assessments and patient complaints

    • Undertake appraisals for band 6 clinical staff

    • Ensure knowledge of escalation policy in the unit closures and other major incidents in collaboration with the site team

    • Be responsible for stock control, equipment checking, asset management for local working area

    • Lead in rota production with the matron for that area under their supervision

    • Be responsible for the design of job specifications, job descriptions and advertisements, being involved in recruitment and selection of junior staff

    PROFESSIONAL AND SERVICE DEVELOPMENT

    • Support the matron in assessing and developing the maternity service

    • Monitor agreed outcomes for local and national quality standards including in audit practice within the clinical area including KPIs

    • Actively contribute to the dissemination of the 6Cs through the workforce

    • Take responsibility for ensuring accurate record keeping in all areas of practice according to NMC code of practice

    • Establish and facilitate support programmes of learning for students

    • Involved in Audit practice within the clinical area including KPIs

    PROFESSIONAL LEADERSHIP/EDUCATION AND TRAINING

    • Be fully aware of and disseminate all local relevant guidelines and polices

    • Lead in the delivery of effective communication between all staff disciplines and external agencies

    • Provide leadership and mentorship for midwives, ancillary staff and students

    • To be a professional role model for leadership and training
    EDUCATION, TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

    • Undertake appropriate activities to update professional knowledge skills and demonstrate evidence of continued professional development in preparation for revalidation
