Cardiac Research Fellow

Applications are invited for the above post to join the Cardiac Research Department, Northwick Park Hospital, London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust. The person appointed will work under the supervision of Professor Roxy Senior, Director of Cardiac Research. The department is embedded within the Cardiology department at Northwick Park and works alongside the clinical team.

This full time, fixed-term post will be offered as an initial contract period of 12 months, subject to annual review with the possibility of extending to a maximum of 3 years, depending on the candidate's academic research interests. The job vacancy will close as soon as sufficient applications have been received.Cardiovascular Medicine is a high profile, exciting and demanding team specialty. You must have the ability to communicate well and wish to develop your academic potential, whilst being interested in effective therapies and enjoy working in a team of specialist nurses, cardiac physiologists and interventionalists. Cardiology is at the cutting edge of medicine with the rapid translation of academic research to clinical practice.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will take a proactive and major role in the department's commercial and non-commercial research, including recruitment of patients and responsibility for their clinical care throughout trials. The department conducts research involving all aspects of heart disease.

The post will also offer extensive experience in cardiovascular imaging techniques including dobutamine and Exercise Stress Echocardiography; Myocardial Contrast Echocardiography and Myocardial Perfusion Scintigraphy. If desired, there is the possibility of pursuing related research towards a higher degree i.e. MD or PhD, at Imperial College London, in one or more of these fields.

The Echocardiography Department at Northwick Park has been granted Centre of Excellence status in the UK for Transthoracic, Transesophageal and Stress Echocardiography, following a formal visit by the British Society of Echocardiography. It is one of the busiest departments in the country, performing ~ 8000 echocardiograms and 3000 stress echocardiograms annually. The department is also one of the few hospitals in the UK to host National Stress Echocardiography workshops throughout the year.

Our facilities include a new angiography suite, along with state-of-the-art echocardiography equipment, a dedicated 26 bed cardiac ward, 8 bed coronary care unit, heart failure unit and 8 bed day care unit for elective outpatient procedures. Please note there is no commitment to a General Medical on call with this post, and we cannot offer any interventional sessions during this post either.

Candidates must be medically-qualified and possess MRCP (or equivalent) and be registered with the GMC with a license to practice. It is a condition of this post that satisfactory Enhanced disclosure is obtained from the Disclosure and Barring Service.
