Leadership Junior Fellow
12 months fixed term
This job is designed for someone who is committed to both Emergency Medicine and learning more about the principles of leadership and management within Emergency Medicine. The successful candidate will be given a timetable that covers rostered clinical duties on the shop floor and protected SPA time approximately 8 hours a week, working alongside the ED management team. The role will teach many of the leadership and organisational qualities needed for the FRCEM management portfolio, and will involve aspects of service design, manpower co-ordination, governance and HR.
We pride ourselves on the close working links between Northwick Park and Ealing EDs and with this in mind, we will expect the Leadership Fellow to support the sharing of learning and standardisation on both sites, although their clinical work will be undertaken in the Northwick Park ED.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of the care of patients in the Emergency Department at Northwick Park Hospital. They will have direct responsibility for the management of patients. An Emergency Medicine Consultant is present on the shop floor between 08:00 - 00:00 at Northwick Park (and 08:00 - 22:00 in Ealing ED) to support management of patients and shop floor teaching. Outside of these hours one of our Middle Grade doctors or Emergency Medicine Training Registrars is designated to undertake the 'lead role' and works in close liaison with the nurse co-ordinator to ensure the department runs efficiently overnight.
The successful candidate will be required to be part of the ED managerial team, with a focus on specific tasks that are essential to ED management. This will be defendant on the specific needs of the department at the time of the successful candidate starting. Recent projects have included the design and business case of the a paediatric observation unit, plans for a psychiatric unit within the ED, management of the Radiology red flag process, the design and recruitment to a new rota pattern, all whilst managing the ED during a rapidly changing pandemic. The role will involve attendance at the departmental managerial meetings, governance and teaching.
