Job summary

Trust Grade CESR Registrar in Emergency Medicine

Basic salary: £33,790 - £53,132 per annum + 1A Banding (50%) + £2,162 London Weighting per annum. In addition to the basic salary shown + 1 A banding and London weighting you will receive £13,000 retention bonus paid in two instalments of £6,500 every six months of completed work.

This job is designed for those who wish to pursue a career in Emergency Medicine and progress to the consultant role via the CESR route. We are looking to replace the senior doctors who have left the trust this year to go into training, and to complement the 7 doctors currently undergoing CESR training (including secondments in Acute medicine, ITU, anaesthetics and paediatrics) alongside an active CESR guidance programme.

Main duties of the job

.The job will involve 3-6 months non lead role middle grade, followed by our in house leadership training program and become senior ED decision makers. Following a maximum of 9-12 months in EM the successful candidate will be expected to be a departmental leader (including at night) and would have the opportunity to go on their first secondment to the specialties.

Doctors leading the department and wishing to stay on either in full time positions or working towards CESR will be supported to do so. Candidates who are not leading the department within 18 months of joining will be supported in finding more suitable roles within the NHS.

Job responsibilities

Portfolio development

The successful candidate will spend time developing their portfolio to enable progression in their emergency medicine CESR application and success. Please come to the interview prepared to tell us about the area that sparks passion for you and that you would want to develop your skills in during your time spent working for our Trust.

The successful candidate will be allocated a Consultant Supervisor knowledgeable in the CESR requirements and process. They will work alongside the candidate to support them over the 12 months to achieve their personal goals including development of an online portfolio and their own professional development plan. These include support in the Work Based Assessments, logbooks, case presentations and management tasks required for a successful CESR application. The candidate will be expected to undertake a structured appraisal at the end of the year which will support future revalidation processes and an in-house ARCP equivalent review of CESR target progression. There is support for the RCEM FRCEM exams and OSCE stations and we have an excellent in house skills course, USS level 1 training and support and Trust based ATLS, EPALS and ALS courses. The ED Consultant body will also support networking for the candidate with key representatives within the Trust in that area of interest. This will support the fostering of links between the ED team and external specialties that is key to running supportive and efficient Urgent and Emergency Care pathways.

Teaching

We prioritise teaching for all members of our multidisciplinary team and you will be expected to participate in teaching to share your skills and knowledge and will be supported to do so using a range of mediums eg e-learning modules on our departmental online teaching platform, through MDT simulation sessions, MS Teams sessions and face to face teaching (as social distancing allows).

Management

All our CESR fellows are expected to participate in Audit and Quality Improvement Projects and management training within the department as expected of the EM GMC Specialty Specific Guidance (SSG) and Emergency medicine curriculum (2021). There is an extensive programme of national, regional and local Audit and QIPs ongoing within our EDs that you will have the opportunity to become involved in and lead on. The successful candidate will be expected to work alongside the patient safety and clinical governance team to ensure any lessons learnt e.g. from drug errors, national patient safety alerts, clinical governance meetings and complaints can be shared in an educational format.

The successful candidate will be encouraged and supported to present their work at local meetings and produce posters to be entered in meetings such as the Royal College of Emergency Medicine Annual Scientific Conference.
