Job summary
Applications are invited for two locum consultants ( 0.60 wte & 0.80 wte) in Specialist Palliative Medicine to join the Specialist Palliative Care Department at London North West University Healthcare Trust (LNWUHT). These posts are intended to fulfil service commitment whilst we undertake the process to appoint substantive posts, the funding for which is already in place. The locum roles give us the opportunity to test different ways to configure current consultant posts to enable them to collectively deliver the best possible patient and carer experience whilst also supporting the workforce to be the best we can be. Hence, with agreement, there is the opportunity to flex job plans, as the needs of the individual post holders and the landscape of provision change.
Main duties of the job
One post is largely hospital based, the other largely, but not exclusively, hospice based. The latter post would still be employed through the NHS Trust to provide the postholder with full NHS Terms and Conditions whilst at the same time ensuring that the post is well supported operationally to enable the post holder to be embedded and supported within the hospice.
About us
London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWH) cares for the people of Brent, Ealing, Harrow and beyond.
Our team of more than 8,200 clinical and support staff serve a diverse population of almost one million people.
We run major acute services at:
- Northwick Park Hospital: home to one of the busiest emergency departments (A&E) in the country. The hospital provides a full range of services including the country's top-rated hyper-acute stroke unit and one of only three hyper-acute rehabilitation units in the UK
- St Mark's Hospital: an internationally renowned specialist centre for bowel disease
- Ealing Hospital: a busy district general hospital providing a range of clinical services, as well as 24/7 emergency department and urgent care centre, and specialist care at Meadow House Hospice
- Central Middlesex Hospital: our planned care site, hosting a range of surgical and outpatient services and collocated with an urgent care centre.
We are a university teaching NHS trust, in recognition of the important role we play in training clinicians of the future and bringing the benefits of research to the public.
Job description
Job responsibilities
As a whole, the LNWUHT department provides palliative and supportive services for inpatients at Northwick Park Hospital, Central Middlesex Hospital, Ealing Hospital and Meadow House Hospice, plus providing community services for patients living in the London Boroughs of Harrow, Ealing, Brent, as well as patients known to St Lukes Hospice, an independent charitable organisation. The consultant workforce has a strong ethos of promoting integration of the posts, education (both within and external to the SPCT), on-call and planning of services across both hospices, acute and community NHS Trusts to ensure coordinated care and flexibility of job plans.
The new post holders will initially be expected to fill vacancies on the Northwick Park site, and in St Lukes Hospice, where they will join three substantive consultants already in post. One post holder is required from August 2022, and the other from October 2022. Both post holders will be expected to participate in a one-in-five second on-call medical rota for Hospice in patients at St Lukes and covering community patients living in Harrow & North Brent.
Close involvement with the end of life agenda, development and enhancement of links with local primary care teams and a commitment to education and service improvement will all be required in this role.
Applications will be accepted from full and specialist registration (and a licence to practice) with the GMC (or eligible for registration within 6 months of interview)
