Job summary

The successful appointee will join a team of 24 Consultants providing Obstetrics & Gynaecology services to the population of Brent, Ealing and Harrow from three sites of Northwick Park Hospital, Central Middlesex Hospital and Ealing Hospital.

The post holder will be expected to be the lead for the Labour ward and to develop antenatal and postnatal pathways, working in close collaboration with other consultants.

The successful candidate will be expected to cover labour ward on a rotational basis along with ante-natal and gynaecology clinics, elective and emergency theatres.

The post holder will be expected to be actively involved in the clinical governance aspects of the directorate and the trust including risk management and CNST.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will:

  • Provide a high quality Obstetrics and Gynaecology service, in conjunction with consultant colleagues already in post. It would be expected that the consultant offers continuous responsibility for the care of patients named under their team
  • Be the lead for Labour Ward and the CTG champion, helping in teaching and training midwives and junior doctors
  • Support the delivery of the Saving Babies Lives (SBL) care bundle and conduct a preterm clinic
  • Demonstrate an active interest in the management of high-risk obstetric patients in the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum and provide a unified multidisciplinary approach to the care of pregnant women
  • Participate in Obstetric Hot week which is being resident on call for labour ward from 0800 - 2000 every 11 weeks. The post holder is expected to be on duty for labour ward only when timetabled for labour ward daytime or on call and not timetabled or undertaking other clinical duties such as antenatal clinic
  • Maintain and develop gynaecological skills, such as outpatient hysteroscopy, gynae ultrasound
  • Enhance the educational opportunities available to our trainees by any reorganisation and development of services that they initiate
  • Regular audits will be required and supervision for Quality Improvement Projects (QIPs) undertaken by the trainees

LNWUH currently has 4500 births per year, with a complex high risk population. The department has recently undergone major building improvement and installation of digital equipment to allow clinicians to communicate and deliver safe care.

The population served has complex needs and the service has a highly skilled staff group with access to modern equipment. The antenatal clinic area is adjacent to the fetal medicine scan rooms and the maternity ultrasound suite. There is a Day Assessment Unit. The labour ward has large delivery rooms with ensuite facilities, two theatres, a dedicated recovery area and smaller close observation bay. The antenatal and postnatal beds are located in high risk and low risk wards. There is a co-located midwifery led unit. The level 2 neonatal unit is within the same building. A new simulation suite is an addition to the training facilities.
