Peer Support Worker

Job summary

We are a newly formed team of clinicians who are excited to have peer support workers co-producing the design, delivery and evaluation of the Trauma Informed Team strategy and programme implementation.

The role will cover all acute inpatient services across South London and the Maudsley. Some direct experiences with service users, staff and stakeholders will be important for this role.

This project will work very closely with the Quality Improvement Team to further develop trauma informed care, thinking and practice across the Trust.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work directly with staff, patients and carers/families to implement trauma informed care on the adult inpatient wards. This will involve supporting research and audit projects alongside direct interventions and support for staff and patients. They will contribute to an open and safe working environment and culture of trauma informed care.

The PSWs will be motivated and enthusiastic about trauma informed care. Their training and lived experience will be invaluable to the project and welcomed across all aspects of the project. Good communication skills will be necessary and the ability to maintain good working relationships.

About us

Our Trauma Informed Care Team is based the Maudsley Hospital in the incredibly vibrant Camberwell. The team consists of a Consultant Psychologist, Clinical Psychologist, Consultant Nurse and two Assistant Psychologists.

Our Trust headquarters is located in the Maudsley Hospital at Denmark Hill less than 5 minutes from the train station and is within walking distance from the beautiful green spaces of Ruskin park and the vibrant high-street.

Bethlem Royal Hospital is based in a beautiful setting in over 200 acres of green space in the London Borough of Bromley. The hospital has easy access to nearby main roads and offers free parking. The site is within walking distance from of Eden Park and West Wickham stations.

Lambeth Hospital is based in south London, zone 2 and is close to a vibrant high street. It is within walking distance of Brixton (overland and tube stations), Clapham North tube station, Clapham High Street rail station and Wandsworth Road overland station, offering easy transport links to other parts of London.

Lewisham Hospital is based in South East London, zone 3 and is close to the beautiful green open spaces of Ladywell fields park and Lewisham park. It is within walking distance to the vibrant high-street and located within walking distance from Ladywell, Hither Green, Catford and Crofton Park overland stations. The site does offer parking and is not located within the congestion charge zone.

Clinical and Client Care:

To provide Peer Support to people using Inpatient Services across SLAM

To assist the trauma-informed approaches team in the development of the strategy and delivery of the project

To arrange, schedule and support with trauma informed training across ward staff and service users.

Contributing to team or service clinical functioning.

To contribute to the effective working of the trauma-informed approaches inpatient project team

To act in a manner that supports a psychologically informed framework for the service grounded in a multidisciplinary team approach

To participate in the team or services delivery of accessible and acceptable services to diverse local communities.

To contribute the development of a strategy for the delivery of trauma-informed care approaches by the adult acute ward MDT across the trust

To support with project planning and administration of the trauma-informed care project team.

Policy and service development

To follow policies and procedures in own area of work.

To participate in the consultation and engagement of service users, carers/families in planning and delivering trauma-informed inpatient services which meet the needs of local communities.

Care or management of resources.

To take care of, and use carefully, the Trusts equipment and physical resources.

To ensure that the post-holder has sufficient resources by estimating future needs and requesting supplies as needed.

To be responsible for safe keeping of equipment or stock provided to the post holder and informing the supervising psychologist or manager when stock requires replenishing (may apply to psychometric tests, specialised stationery etc.)

Teaching and Training

To (arrange, schedule and) support training to employees of the Trust or employees of partner agencies to support service improvement

Record-keeping and Information Governance

To ensure that all information generated by own work is recorded as required by Trust policies and local procedures.

Under the supervision of the practitioner psychologist or Manager to maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping and report writing, according to professional and Trust guidelines, including electronic data entry.

To maintain data bases and enter data and perform analyses and produce reports.

Research and development.

To support in assisting the design and implementation of audit and research projects to inform the development of trauma-informed approaches across the trust inpatient wards including developing an understanding of examples of excellent practice from other organisations.

Under guidance to support with conduct surveys with staff, service users and carers and other stakeholders to gather views on service provision and trauma-informed care.

Maintaining professional standards and continuing professional development.

To receive regular clinical and professional supervision in accordance with professional practice guidelines

To develop skills and competencies that assist in the delivery of current duties.

To undertake personal training relevant to the post in agreement with the supervising psychologist and the manager.

General

To travel to Trust and other locations as appropriate and across the Trust when required.

To be aware of risk relating to aggressive and challenging behaviour amongst the client group and follow trust policies relating to its management.

To respond appropriately and professionally to emotionally distressing situations and to support others involved in such situations.

To work flexibly which may include offering some regular commitment to late clinics or Saturday working, within the overall Job Plan.
