South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) is working with MACANI, a highly respected Abu Dhabi based organisation with a mission to develop and extend high quality mental health care across the United Arab Emirates. The service has been operating in the UAE for nine years and since March 2018 the Service has been working with Emirates Health Services (EHS) to support the development of Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital into a Centre of Excellence.
The service requires a Head of Education and Training, based within what is currently the Region's only Hospital dedicated to psychiatric care. It is a truly exciting and unique opportunity to be part of a senior and experienced team working to support the further development of existing services and influence and shape new services in great facilities. You would be working closely with experienced senior staff from Maudsley Health and the in house leadership team at the Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital. The Hospital has JCI Accreditation.
Mental Health services are still developing in the Region and the ability to use initiative a degree of flexibility and creativity will be required together with an appreciation of relevant cultural issues. Of greatest importance is the ambition to deliver high quality, evidence based services.
The ability to speak Arabic is an advantage but is not essential.
Main duties of the job
Working closely with the Senior Management Team, to initiate, deliver and embed programmes of education and development to enhance the safety, experience and outcomes of people using services, and to improve the skill and satisfaction of staff delivering care. This will be achieved by the provision of:
- Meaningful mandatory training
- Postgraduate training in mental health nursing
- Advanced clinical training for all professionals
- Leadership and management development
- Research and development opportunities
- Implementation of a credible weekly training programme
- Supervision and appraisal
- Supportive work placements for staff on secondment and rotation from UK, UAE and elsewhere
Close collaboration with the quality team in order to ensure JCIA compliance and achieve further accreditations in the field of mental health.
This role is to support the development of a Centre of Excellence, working closely with the Senior Management Team at Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital.
The postholder should enhance the reputation of Maudsley Health, Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.
About us
Maudsley Health is the brand name for the collaboration between South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM)and MACANI, the local partner. It was formed in 2015 to support the development of high-quality mental health services within the Middle East. Ambitious development plans are being progressed and the service is growing geographically and clinically in a planned way.
The service provides evidence-based assessments and treatments on an out-patient basis for all age ranges and presentations from wellbeing and prevention through to the most complex of presentations. The service adopts a multi-disciplinary approach. Training, development, consultation and advice is offered and collaborative working with other professionals, families and patients is encouraged within a supportive environment.
A specialist Perinatal service and a specialist Trauma service are in place and additional specialist services are planned.An Academic Department is currently being formed to encourage and support research research and education.
In 2025 a Maudsley Health Hospital will open in Abu Dhabi.
In Dubai, Maudsley Health works under a contractual arrangement with Emirates Health Services (EHS) to support the development of Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital, currently the Region's only Hospital dedicated to psychiatric care.

- Ensure staff access clinical and leadership training aligned with service delivery plans.

Professional Leadership
- Encourage staff engagement and participation in satisfaction surveys.

- Although not essential, a clinical post-holder should role-model excellent care and professional boundaries.
