Job summary

Multisite Randomised Controlled Trial of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for psychosis to reduce post-traumatic stress symptoms in people with co-morbid post-traumatic stress disorder and psychosis, compared to Treatment as Usual: the STAR (Study of TraumaAnd Recovery) trial

Applications are invited for a full-time Assistant Psychologist Research Worker post (Band 4) for 7 months, at the South London and Maudsley (SLaM) NHS Foundation Trust and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), King's College London (KCL).

The post is an exciting opportunity to be part of the final phase of the STAR (Study of Trauma and Recovery) trial, a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded multisite Randomised Controlled Trial to evaluate a Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for psychosis (TF-CBTp) for people with post-traumatic stress and psychosis symptoms which has been running since 2020. The STAR trial is taking place in 5 sites across the UK: London, Manchester, Newcastle, Oxford & Sussex. The trial team includes Prof Emmanuelle Peters, Dr Nadine Keen, Dr Amy Hardy, Prof Richard Emsley, Prof Sarah Byford, Dr Sarah Swan, Dr Raphael Underwood, Prof Tony Morrison, Prof Filippo Varese, Dr EleanorLongden, Dr Samantha Bowe, Prof Craig Steel, Prof Kathryn Greenwood, Dr Nick Grey, Dr Robert Dudley & Prof Doug Turkington.

Main duties of the job

You will support and enhance the clinical research activities of the trial.

Your primary role will be to assess participants in the trial, close liaison with clinical teams and participants, data entry and data management. You will receive training in the assessment measures, communicating with people with trauma and psychosis, and data management procedures.

You should have strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills, have the ability to deliver work according to deadlines, and be flexible and resilient.

You will be expected to travel across all SLaM boroughs to carry out participants assessments when needed.

You will be managed and supervised on a weekly basis by the Trial Coordinators, and will also attend regular group supervision with the Research Workers from other sites.You will work closely with the London STAR research team, including researchers, clinicians and experts-by-experience, attending and participating in monthly site meetings.

Qualifications

Essential

  • oA First-class or Upper-second-class Bachelors degree with Honours in Psychology that is accredited by the British Psychological Society and confers the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the British Psychological Society.

Experience

Essential

  • oExperience of assessment and / or research with people with psychosis or complex needs.
  • oExperience of conducting psychological research projects or audits.

Desirable

  • Experience of working with people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.
  • Previous experience working on a clinical trial

Knowledge

Essential

  • Good theoretical knowledge of the problems experienced by and the needs of people experiencing trauma and psychosis
  • Knowledge of psychological models relevant to psychosis and evidence base for related interventions

Skills

Essential

  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills including communicating complex, information to clients, families and colleagues.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to facilitate engagement and interaction with people with psychosis and complex needs
