Job summary

The South London and Maudsley NHs Trust is looking for a full-time band 5 advanced clinical exercise instructor based at the Royal Bethlem Hospital (Beckenham, Kent).

You will be part of a small team who provide exercise opportunities for our patients. We are ideally looking for an exercise instructor with experienced in working in mental health to promote and deliver exercise classes both in groups and one on one as well as running of our gym facilities. You will need to be flexible, enthusiastic, and keen to promote the important and value of exercise to our patients and staff. Exercise professionals with degree qualifications or related equivalence in experience are welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

1. Working autonomously within the parameters of the role leading, on implementation of a range and up to date evidence based physical activity initiatives. To provide and lead on a range of clinical exercise programmes for patients with relatively less complex, but stable needs.

o Investigating referrals and initial data collection and referral investigations

o Monitoring of individual service user progress

o Feedback and discussion

o Producing reports and in-care reviews

o Devising a plan of care and interventions

o Co-ordinating and Monitoring of Lifestyle Medicine Delivery

2. Conduct active delivery of exercise referral consultations, assessments and tailored programmes by managing own caseload including effective communication with key workers and other members of the multi- disciplinary team. Undertaking 1:1 service user sessions tailored to specific needs and clinical indications. Contributing to service user wellbeing and improvement in physical health status through the use of lifestyle focussed interventions and supervising junior members of the team. Liaising with the multi-disciplinary teams (MDT), ensure patients are offered, and have access to a range of opportunities to be active throughout the day.

Essential

  • ACSM Exercise Instructor or Equivalent ie NVQ 3
  • Member of Register of Exercise Professionals
  • Certificate in Exercise Prescription
  • Certificate in Nutritional Assessment

Desirable

  • Degree in Sports Science or other related field.
  • Recognised GP Exercise Referral Qualification.
  • Qualifications in field of complimentary therapy

Experience /Knowledge

Essential

  • Organising and teaching a variety of sporting and physical activities in leisure centres, schools
  • Experience in prescribing exercise to recognised standards
  • Demonstrating an understanding of Exercise prescription for those who present with signs and symptoms which are suggestive of Cardiovascular, Metabolic, musculo- skeletal or Renal Disease.
  • Previous experience (at least one year) of working as a gym instructor, with groups and individuals, screening and assessing clients and designing exercise programs

Desirable

  • Recognizing and responding appropriately to challenging behaviour.
  • Supporting junior staff in managing difficult situations and de-escalation and developing resilience and strategies to manage.
  • Demonstrating a depth of knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of lifestyle medicine and its evidence base for the treatment of both physical and emotional health.

  • Able to receive and convey sensitive information, with service users, staff and relatives and recording this accurately.
  • Manage own caseload and effectively informing team members of priorities when needed including the participation in departmental evaluation, audit, and research and development.

  • Taking a key role in the production, coordination and the promoting of healthier lifestyles through a variety of communication methods, including delivery of The Clinical Exercise Departments lifestyle medicine course across all areas of the trust, attendance at health fairs/events, writing newsletter articles etc

  • Provide advice to clients and staff on healthy eating and other health related behaviours.
