Job summary

  • AID-IIT (Autism and Intellectual Disability Intensive Intervention Team) is a relatively new addition (October 2020) to the Service for Complex Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders (SCAAND) / Tier 4 CAMHS. AID-IIT as a team serves the entire London and greater London region.
  • The service is currently funded by NHS England since its establishment in 2020 with a plan for the funding to transfer to South London Partnership (SLP) in the near future.
  • AID-IIT aims to reduce or prevent where possible inpatient CAMHS admissions for children and young people with Intellectual Disabilities and Autism and to support these young people to continue to live in the community.

All work is done in close partnership with local Outpatient and Specialist CAMHS, Inpatient Adolescent and Children's units and other providers including social care and education.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will be expected to provide expertise and leadership during multidisciplinary assessments, consultations, and interventions to referring professionals.
  • There will be a significant amount of community work including assessment, attendance at planning meetings, CETR, LAEP and other meetings involving the young person.
  • There will be an expectation that the successful candidate works closely with inpatient units and assertive outreach teams around London, attending CPAs and providing partnership working with colleagues.
  • Close working with the community LD / neurodevelopmental CAMHS teams across London will be an essential component of the post.
  • This is a post which is being advertised as the current Consultant Psychiatrist has new additional responsibilities as the CAMHS AMD and therefore additional clinical capacity is needed for the service (backfill). This Consultant Psychiatrist postholder will work closely with the current Consultant Psychiatrist (6 sessions), the Clinical Psychologist and Team Lead to continue to develop the service.

Job responsibilities

The successful applicant will also be asked (subject to suitability) to join the SLaM consultant CAMHS on-call rota with an approximate frequency of 1:22 weeks.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Clinical Duties. Consultant leadership and involvement with assessments, interventions, care planning.
  2. Provision and Cover During Absences: 6 weeks notice is required for both annual leave and study leave to ensure the clinical rota can be managed accordingly. Leave will be authorised by Associate Medical Director, taking into account other leave and service priorities. Leave will be covered by a consultant psychiatrist in National and Specialist CAMHS and is arranged by the post holder.
  3. Medical Practice: All members of the Trusts' medical staff are expected to practice within current GMC guidelines, in particular those contained within the booklets on Good Medical Practice and Maintaining Good Medical Practice. These booklets outline the duties of doctors who are registered with the GMC, emphasises the responsibility of every doctor to ensure standards of good clinical care, to keep up to date with clinical skills, to work in teams and to maintain good relationships with colleagues in all disciplines. The Trusts are committed to these principles and will provide support for education and development of all grades of staff.
  4. Clinical Governance: The Trust has established multi-disciplinary clinical governance mechanisms that the postholder will be expected to participate in. Evidence based practice implementation of local policies and procedures that support best practice both uni-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary. Risk management processes to ensure clinical and non clinical risks are identified and actions taken as appropriate.
  5. Audit: The Trust undertakes regular clinical audit of their activities and the appointee will be expected to take part in this programme. The appointee may be expected to further develop audit and associated data collection relevant to their work and that of their departments.
  6. Research/Academic: The postholder will assist in the implementation of research and evaluation where required and support clinical staff in developing new research and evaluation projects.
  7. Teaching, Supervision and support to training and non-consultant staff grade posts: There are weekly training sessions for junior and middle grade doctors open to all staff. The post-holder, as a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist in SLaM can contribute to the academic programmes for both CTs and STs. The post does not have junior doctors attached to it.
  8. Other Elements of the Role: Ensure that electronic patient clinical records relating to post holder's work are well maintained and meet Trust standards for documentation and communication with referrers and users are met. Promote good links with Tier 3 and local outreach CAMHS. Contribute to the development of polices and procedures to support good practice and ensure that appropriate high-quality clinical services are delivered. Ensure that policies and procedures are implemented to safeguard and protect children and young people and where necessary implement the CPA process. Provide a service that promotes diversity; meet the needs of service users from diverse ethnic, cultural and religious traditions, accessible and sensitive to needs relating to disability, gender, and sexual orientation. The postholder will assist in planning and collating activity information as requested to meet the demands of Performance Management and have opportunity to assist in Service and Business Planning and Development. Help maintain a clinical database and keep all other records and statistics as necessary and required. Apply quality standards to all work undertaken, in line with Trust Clinical Governance policies. Attend professional meetings as appropriate within and outside the Directorate, in accordance with CPD and agreed Personal Development Plan.
  9. Job Plan: The contract states that there is a requirement for all staff to have firm job plans. These plans are intended to give the Associate Medical Director (Dr Eirini Skouta) a more explicit input into the arrangements and review of doctors' duties. A job plan is a detailed description of the duties and responsibilities of a doctor and of the facilities available to carry them out. A job plan and a work programme are an integral part of the doctor's contract of employment. Appraisal and job planning occur annually with the Lead Clinicians for N&S Services and the service manager. The Appraisal is undertaken by one of the Consultant Psychiatrist for the SLAM services. In terms of office space and administrative support, the post holder will have access to a desk with dedicated IT and shared secretarial support.
  10. Access to Mentoring: The post holder will have access to mentoring in accordance with the Trust's Mentoring and Coaching policy. The Trust is committed to facilitating a supportive mentoring scheme for ALL newly appointed consultants, and actively encourages consultants to participate, both as mentee, and as 'trained' mentor. The Deputy Medical Director holds a list of Trust-trained mentors and will put forward a name for the mentee to consider. Further contact is then between the mentee and mentor.

Accountability: The appointee will be professionally responsible to Associate Medical Director (Dr Eirini Skouta) via the Lead Clinicians for N&S (Dr Guglani and Dr Johnston) for clinical work and to the CAG Academic Lead for academic work.
