Job summary

The Registered Nurse Degree Apprentice is a developmental post open to staff members of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust with a current registration as a Nursing Associate with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The postholder will complete the Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship with the University of Greenwich, leading to registration as a Registered Mental Health Nurse with the NMC. The position will last for the duration of the Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship - typically 18 months. The post holder will develop and maintain the knowledge, skills and competencies required for the role of a Registered Nurse.

The post holder will complete a mix of campus-based study at the AEI, and supernumerary placements across a range of clinical care settings during which they will be classified as a "student" as per NMC Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment (2018).

Main duties of the job

o To develop the requisite knowledge, skills and behaviours to meet the Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship Standard, the NMC Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses (2018) and the requirements for the declaration of good health and character for registration with the NMC.o To understand the structure and requirements of the apprenticeship, and to meet all apprenticeship gateway / end point assessment (EPA) requirements.o To plan and organise their own workload appropriate to ensure that they can complete the constituent parts of the programme successfully, including attendance at all study days scheduled by the AEI, submission of all academic module assignments, and completion and submission of all proficiencies required for entry on to the NMC register.o To actively participate in their own education, attending all practice placements as required by the programme, and learning from a range of registered and unregistered professionals across a variety of settings, in accordance with the NMC Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment (2018).o To maintain contact with their line manager as required, and to make suitable plans to ensure that mandatory and statutory training is scheduled and completed appropriately as required by Trust Policy, and that annual leave is taken in accordance with the course timetable.

Works in accordance with local policy and practice, including safeguarding and raising concerns, participates in audit activities being undertaken in area of practice, and contribute positively to discussions about the improvement of care. Under the supervision of a registered nurse, contributes towards the delivery of high quality, compassionate, evidence-based care to patients using person-centred approaches which promote health and independence. Develop skills to maintains clear and accurate patient records using both digital and paper-based records. Maintain confidentiality as outlined within data protection and information governance policies. Uses a wide range of communication methods, including verbal, non-verbal and written, to interact with a variety of individuals including patients, carers, and members of the multi-professional team in a manner which is safe, effective, compassionate, and respectful. Demonstrates effective approaches to monitoring signs and symptoms of physical, mental, cognitive, behavioural, and emotional distress, deterioration or improvement and liaises with the registered practitioner in an appropriate and timely manner to review / reassess care needs as required. Once assessed as proficient by a registered practitioner, demonstrate own duties to new or less experienced staff, and supports development of less experienced staff and students.
