Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Band6 - Psychiatric Liaison Nurse to join the Southwark Mental Health Liaison Service within our busy, multi-disciplinary Liaison Team based at Kings College Hospital.

The Liaison Team provides a 24 hr, 7 days a week service to Kings College Hospital offering urgent assessment and intervention to general adult patients attending the Emergency Department and those admitted to the inpatient wards. The service works closely with Kings College Hospital staff in a variety of medical settings.

Main duties of the job

You must have excellent clinical skills, be able to demonstrate an ability to complete comprehensive mental state examinations, thoroughly assess risk, formulate safe and effective risk management plans and document this clearly. You should have experience of mental health emergencies, and crisis care in a variety of settings including community services.

You will be able work autonomously, carrying out bio-psycho-social assessments and making decisions about patient assessments, pathways and treatment as a liaison clinicianwith awareness of when to seek advice and support from senior colleagues.

You will hold a sound working knowledge of common mental health disorders, the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and DOLs. A comprehensive knowledge of the important interface between physical and mental health is essential.

You must have very good communication and interpersonal skills. You must also beexperienced and motivated, flexible and be able to show initiative in an environment which can be fast paced and pressured.

  • To independently assess patients presenting to the Emergency Department and Acute Medical wards with mental health, psychological and substance misuse problems, including those who have deliberately self-harmed.
  • To autonomously make clear decisions based on the analysis of a variety of complex presenting problems, risk assessments and risk management.
  • To devise and deliver interim management and care plans for these patients in the Emergency Department and on Acute Medical wards requiring Psychiatric input. To liaise with and refer on to hospitals and community based mental health services, both within South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and elsewhere.
  • To provide mental health support and advice to acute staff who are undertaking enhanced observations or working with the team on the management of psychiatric patients in the Emergency department and acute wards to ensure provision of an effective and efficient mental health service.
  • To provide on a rostered basis, effective mental health assessments and interventions in a responsive manner.
  • To work closely and effectively with Home Treatment Teams to ensure optimum care for patients
  • To participate in peer supervision, support and training to members of the team or the acute Trust when required.
