Job summary

This is an exciting and critical post which is key to our ambitions to ensure that we are providing outstanding mental health services to people in South London with psychological therapies as a core and integrated component.

The post-holder will support the Director of Psychology & Psychotherapy in providing trust-wide governance, leadership, and strategic direction for our talented and motivated workforce of Psychologists, Psychotherapists, and other Psychological Therapy staff in South London and the Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. The post-holder will be an ambassador for the Psychological Professions and a positive role model. They will be part of the senior leadership team ensuring that Psychological Professionals have a strong presence in delivering our Trust and Clinical Strategies. The post-holder would also hold two - three clinical sessions in an area of work appropriate to their skills and experience.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will support the Director of Psychology & Psychotherapy and other senior leaders across the trust to:

  • Be responsible for strategic development of psychological therapies within all services at South London and Maudsley.
  • Provide visible clinical and professional leadership to staff delivering psychological therapies in these pathways and ensuring that appropriate clinical governance and supervision arrangements are in place.
  • Ensure that Slam is a leading provider of training opportunities for Psychological Professionals and the development of new roles and career pathways with the Psychological workforce.
  • Maintain their own clinical practice and role through providing a highly specialist clinical service within their discipline and field of expertise in an agreed part of the service.
  • Build and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with service directors, service managers and ward and team managers as well as external stakeholders and experts by experience.
  • Provide clinical specialist input to the Senior Management team.
  • Role model exemplary personal and leadership qualities, acting as an ambassador for the trust and the psychological professions and deputising as required for the Director of Psychology & Psychotherapy.

The Psychological Professions report to the trust board through the Director of Therapies giving a voice at the highest level of the organisation.

Our Trust headquarters is located at Denmark Hill less than 5 minutes from the train station (zone 2). We also provide services and operate across other locations, such as London boroughs of Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark; and substance misuse services for residents of Bexley, Lambeth, Greenwich and Wandsworth. The post-holder will be based at Trust Headquarters but will need to be able to flexibly travel to services across the area covered by the trust. The trust supports hybrid working with some remote work being possible in this role.

This role works within the Trust-wide Corporate Psychology and Psychotherapy department. The Trust Deputy Director of Psychology & Psychotherapy will provide a high level of support to the Trust Director of Psychology and Psychotherapy working closely with other Directorate Heads of Psychology and Psychotherapy and other very senior staff in the Trust to:

  • develop and implement strategy to ensure that the department and the organisations business plans, operational targets and the activities appropriately reflect clinical priorities and are in line with best practice within the resources available.
  • contribute to service transformation, supporting the staff within the Operational Directorates, and across the organization to achieve transformational change which meets local requirements, trust-wide and national standards.
  • provide visible clinical leadership to psychological therapies staff working within the Trust acting as an ambassador to the profession both within the Trust and externally.
  • build effective working relationships with personnel from other external NHS and partner organisations to further local Trust and wider national priorities,
  • as a Trust Psychology and Psychotherapy Advisory Committee (TPPAC) leader, supporting staff across the Trust to address professional and developmental needs.
  • Be responsible, as a member of TPPAC, for developing, agreeing and implementing governance standards, policies and objectives associated with the practice of Psychology and Psychotherapy across the Trust
  • support the transformation of the current psychological workforce to meet the requirements of changes in the Trust and the NHS and lead of developing new psychological professions.
  • provide an appropriate emphasis on the development and implementation of the overarching training and education strategy for psychology and psychotherapy staff across the Trust.
  • integrate research, teaching and clinical activity so that there is a continual cycle of innovation, review, evaluation and improvement based on best practice standards and an environment fostering innovation and service development.
  • ensure there are effective relationships with commissioners, local authorities and other external stakeholders with a particular focus on clinical perspectives, quality and service user experience.
  • develop culturally sensitive services acceptable to an ethnically diverse inner-city population and to ensure fair access to services irrespective of gender, sexuality, religion, culture, race or disability.
  • support and promote the effective management, development and strategic direction of the Trust
  • take the lead on projects and service development initiatives as agreed with Director of Psychology and Psychotherapy.

Essential

  • Entry-level qualification in applied psychological therapy/mental health/social welfare profession OR equivalent and demonstrable practice in this field (professional Doctorate, or combination of MSc plus PG Diploma level/supervised practice/additional training) that has been accepted for the purposes of professional registration as a Psychological Professional.
  • Registered with professional body as appropriate to discipline e.g. HCPC/BPS/UKCP/BABCP/AFT
  • Evidence of continuing training in a specialised area of psychological practice through formal post-graduate training (diploma or equivalent), OR a combination of specialist short courses

  • Project management qualification

  • Extensive experience in professional leadership of psychologists and/or psychotherapists such as in a directorate type structure
