Job summary

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLAM) are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic, full time, substantive Consultant Psychiatrist to lead one of our Community Mental health teams in the London Borough of Lewisham.

If you are looking for an exciting frontline role, within an established community mental health team, with opportunities to work closely with Primary care partners and lead on further service development and incorporating quality improvement methodology to evaluate changes, then this is the ideal post for you.

We welcome applications from Higher trainees who will be obtaining their CCT in August 2023. We also applications from those who wish to work fewer sessions or work flexibly, as long as this is in line with the Trust's flexible working policy).

You will be providing input for the Primary Care Mental Health Team and the Community Mental Health Team in Lewisham's Neighbourhood 2 N2).

You will be supported by a range of MDT staff including two other substantive consultants (both are already in post) and 3 GP trainees. In total there will be three WTE Consultants working in this team including the post that is currently being advertised.

Main duties of the job

To provide enthusiastic, and flexible, joint clinical leadership and consultant input into the team, alongside the Clinical Service Lead

  • To take consultant responsibility for your sector of the Neighbourhood Community Mental Health team, acting as Approved Clinician and assessing or supervising assessment and management of patients and devising or helping to devise appropriate treatment plans and medication regimes, providing prompt medical response, and advising and work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team
  • To provide consultant input into the Primary Care Mental Health Team, using your expertise to provide advice, liaising closely with GPs and other stakeholders, and providing assessment of complex presentations and creating appropriate management plans
  • To offer expert risk assessment and management skills in complex care of people with severe mental illness

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification

Desirable

  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines)
  • Experience in other relevant specialties such as in patient, liaison psychiatry, home treatment or addictions
