Job summary
South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) is looking to recruit a Substantive Consultant Psychiatrist for Florence ward. It is currently a 15-bedded mixed gender ward for adults aged 18-65 (6 men and 9 women), situated in the Lambeth Hospital, alongside four other acute inpatient wards and one Trust-wide male Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit.
The Trust has been in the middle of a large-scale relocation programme this year, which includes upcoming relocation of the Lambeth Hospital to the New Douglas Bennet House in the Maudsley site in the summer 2023. All the Lambeth acute wards and PICU will move to the purpose-build, specially designed wards: an exciting opportunity not only to offer much improved and therapeutic environment to our patients and staff but also to modernise our practice in more person-centred, less restrictive ways.
Upon relocation, Florence ward will become a 18-bedded female only ward.
Florence ward is staffed with a full multidisciplinary team including a consultant psychiatrist (this post), a full-time psychiatric higher trainee, core trainee and foundation trainee, together with the ward manager, nursing team, occupational therapist, activity coordinator, psychology and pharmacy support and a ward administrator. The unit is also supported by two Lambeth Hospital trust grade float doctors as required in hours and the on-call doctor out of hours.
Main duties of the job
The main clinical duties are to provide senior medical input as consultant psychiatrist / Approved Clinician for the patients treated in Florence ward, and to be part of the joint senior leadership for the ward alongside the ward manager and modern matrons. There is reciprocal Approved Clinician cover including under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act for the leave, study leave and sickness of senior medical staff in Lambeth during working hours.
The post holder will provide out-of-hour senior medical input as per the Lambeth consultant on-call rota (1:24) with a category 'B' 1% banding supplement.
As for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, the post holder will be the Clinical Supervisor for the trainees (a ST, CT and FY) placed in the team, and supervise year 3 medical students of King's College London allocated to the ward for their longitudinal placements.
About us
The successful candidate will work in Lambeth SLaM, which is part of the the Living Well Network Alliance (LWNA), a collaboration with the local place-base of the ICB, local authorities and two voluntary sector partners (Certitude and Thames Reach). The LWNA is the first Alliance in the country to provide whole system mental health care for working age adults with innovation, co-production and populations needs at the centre of service development and delivery.
The post holder will take advantage of all the opportunities of innovative service development, quality improvement and management / leadership development in the LWNA as well as within the Trust. There are ample opportunities for educational and academic roles and collaborations as SLaM is part of King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre and also the only mental health trust in the UK to have our own biomedical research centre, hosted jointly with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at KCL.
