Job summary
We are pleased to advertise this 12-month secondment into the positionof Team Leader, Smoke Free Team starting in January 2023. This is an exciting opportunity for colleagues with relevant experience, strong leadership and operational skills to undertake clinical and managerial responsibility for the Tobacco Dependent Advisors working across South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust sites and have an operational overview on the day to day running of the service provision. This will include ensuring the service is safe and effective, delivers on all performance targets and achieves positive outcomes with patients.
The Team Leader in conjunction with the Smoke Free Healthy Hospital Programmes Leader will oversee the on-going development of evidence-based interventions in order to meet the needs of a group of patients with multiple complex physical, psychological and social needs across all four Trust sites. It is vital that the post holder has effective leadership qualities, can implement, and manage change, has a proactive approach to communication and is skilled in developing links and maintaining partnership arrangements with stakeholders within and outside the Trust.
Main duties of the job
- provide strong and decisive leadership and management of all Tobacco Dependence Advisors. To manage the staff team and all day-to-day issues of the service. To deputise at designated times in the absence of the Smoke Free Healthy Hospital Programme Lead.
- To ensure regular clinical and line management supervision, appraisal (personal development plans) and teaching of staff across the team to ensure high standard of client care.
- To facilitate and manage change whilst maintaining a high-quality effective service.
- To support Tobacco Dependence Advisors with the implementation of evidence-based interventions for clients with complex needs where required.
- To work with the business manager in meeting that service information requirements are met
- Undertaking of regular audits to ensure that all clinical records/ practice is of a high quality and in line with Trust, CQC standards and national polices/ guidance, NHS E recommendations and NICE guidance.
- To organise, attend and facilitate relevant clinical and service development team meetings as well as specific borough and Trust wide meetings.
- To actively promote and encourage patient and carer involvement in the service.
- To draft/ review/ evaluate clinical protocols/ operational procedures as required.
- To manage human resources issues to optimum effect including being involved in and leading on staff recruitment and selection process, performance management, sickness management etc. as required.

The Smoke Free Team supports adults from all ethnic and cultural backgrounds, who are under the care of the South London and Maudsley (SLaM) NHS Trust.
South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust(SLaM) provide the widest range of NHS mental health services in the UK as well as substance misuse services for people who are addicted to drugs and alcohol. We work closely with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN), King's College London and are part of King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre. Treatment for tobacco use
- Maintain clinical assessment and treatment reports as part of the clinical record system that are accessible to all care providers to ensure seamless service delivery.
- Ensure the team work autonomously to deliver evidence-based tobacco and cannabis dependence treatment in line with the relevant SLaM Policies, Department of Health and NICE guidance, and NCSCT best practice guidance
- Utilise texting and other digital support systems to ensure additional layers of support are accessible to patients when appropriate.
- Liaise with clinical teams regarding the safe and effective care for the management of medication associated with stopping and restarting smoking.
- Ensure that all interventions are provided in a kind, caring and compassionate way.
- Ensure that all smokers and cannabis users are offered health education information, information about local substance misuse and stop smoking services, including self-help/mutual aid groups, to enable them make informed choices about their ongoing care/ and treatment
- Support liaison with, local dual diagnosis practitioners, and substance misuse and stop smoking services to promote effective joint planning/transfer of care when appropriate
- Facilitate family and carers involvement in assessment and care planning where appropriate and ensure they are offered information support groups/services
Education and training
- Support the identification of tobacco/cannabis dependence training needs of staff in the Trust, design and deliver bespoke training packages.
- Promote the uptake of SLaMs smoking and dual diagnosis training pathway
- Co-design and co-produce educational resources suitable highlighting the risks associated with tobacco and the benefits of quitting.
- Provide support for SLaM staff in relation to their work with smokers this will include team based teaching, bite-size teaching, webinars, e-learning, school based sessions etc.
- Act as a specialist resource for tobacco use issues by disseminating up to date information on local/national guidance, research and audit and promoting implementation of same
- Liaise with LEAP administrators to maintain Tobacco dependence training data
- Support students on clinical placement to enhance their knowledge and skills around the issues of tobacco / cannabis dependence
- Develop teaching and promotional materials to help communicate the issues around using tobacco and cannabis in mental health care settings.
- Ensure appropriate provision of supervision and support for team based dual diagnosis leads and stop smoking champions.
- Work collaboratively with team managers to inform the supervision, appraisal and development of personal development plans for team members.
Service development
- Participate in the ongoing development, implementation, success and sustainability of relevant policies including the Smoke Free Policy, Managing Substance Use on Trust Premises Policy, Care and Treatment of Service Users with Dual Diagnosis Policy and SLaMs Physical Healthcare and Healthy Lifestyle Strategy (2018 2023).
- Support continuity of care between hospital and community services
- Contribute to and influence the development of clinical guidelines necessary to support the tobacco / cannabis dependence treatment service.
- Maintain a comprehensive data set to capture service activity, including referral, attendance and outcome records to inform service evaluation and development
- Actively participate in quality improvement projects and initiatives to advance with the aim of achieving better clinical outcomes, better value for money and better satisfaction with the service.
