South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) has an exciting opportunity and is looking to recruit a Consultant Psychiatrist for the Southwark Liaison Psychiatry Team based at King's College Hospital, Denmark Hill.
In this role, the Consultant Psychiatrist's expertise will be the driving force for life-changing treatment - supported by trainees and a first-class multidisciplinary team. The Consultant will have a unique opportunity to work with the leadership team to develop effective interface between services. This role is for the individual interested in service improvement and development of their leadership skills.
Main duties of the job
It is a condition of your employment that you are, and remain, a fully registered medical practitioner and are included on the Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry held by the General Medical Council (GMC), or are eligible for inclusion into the register within six months of your appointment and continue to hold a licence to practice. You will be approved under Section 12 (2) of the Mental Health Act 1983 and be an Approved Clinician or able to achieve this within 3 months of your appointment.
The salary range for this post is in accordance with the NHS consultant salary scale (whole time), plus London Weighting (whole time).
The main duties of this 6 PA consultant post are to provide psychiatry consultant leadership and to act as Approved Clinician to the Southwark Liaison Psychiatry Team. The post holder will provide clinical cover for the other Southwark directorate consultants and vice versa. The post holder will be employed by the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust.

- To take consultant responsibility for patients assessing or supervising assessment and management of patients and devising or helping to devise appropriate treatment plans and medication regimes, providing prompt medical response, and advising and work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team
- To offer expert risk assessment and management skills in complex care of people with severe mental illness in the acute hospital
- To ensure excellence in the delivery of evidence-based treatments
- To act as a source of support, advice and information to current or prospective patients and their carers, referrers, team members and other professionals
- In conjunction with the Clinical Service Lead, will help to represent the team at care pathway meetings and other internal and external meetings where needed.
- To provide reciprocal Approved Clinician cover including under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act for the leave, study leave and sickness of senior medical staff in Southwark during working hours
- To keep up to date with all developments in research and treatment around acute care pathways and inpatient mental health care
- To develop strong working relationships with outside stakeholders, notably GPs, local authority social services, housing providers and local voluntary organisations.
